I took on a charity case.

I have never worked so damned hard for such a little amount of money in my damned life. Why in the world did I fall for it?

My old boss used to take on charity surveys for small rural cemeteries.?ÿ Most were a complete nightmare.?ÿ Family plots had been deeded out but slope distance measurements caused overlaps with other plots.?ÿ Sorting through piles of incomplete, unorganized, and illegible notes on the locations of deeded, but unoccupied plots, took days to complete and rarely gave you a warm fuzzy feeling when completed.?ÿ?ÿ

This was, is a poor woman who went through a life altering experience with a foreclosure and is now paying cash for everything.?ÿ She bought a very run down 800 sq.ft. house at a tax sale and is in the process of making it rather nice. School bus driver and a all around decent person who is terrified of any debt owed to anyone.

Sometimes you just do what's right, even if it costs you.?ÿ Just think of it as being in the Christmas spirit and write off any loss to good will.?ÿ

I was able to do a survey for someone that really couldn't afford it and we did it for about 25% of the cost.?ÿ?ÿThe boss allowed me to do it because I told him this guy was getting screwed over.?ÿ He was in court fighting a bad survey and they were wanting him to settle.?ÿ The other surveyor had used a plate in the road that was center line center line instead of the section corner, which was about 30 feet different.?ÿ He couldn't even afford a lawyer to help him.?ÿ Once I completed the survey the adjoiner turned around and hired another surveyor who agreed with what I did and the guys problems just melted away.?ÿ I felt pretty good about it and he was very thankfull.?ÿ He had major heart problems and passed away a few years latter but at least he wasn't worrying about the boundary problem those last few years.

I try to do 1 or 2 free surveys a year, mostly for non profits. Sometimes it doesn't work out, but it's still the right thing to do.?ÿIn the last year since the hurricanes, I've done a few surveys for people that lost homes and are really struggling.

One time after the non profit got their little building up they put a thank you letter in the paper thanking all the donations and help they got from the community - but no mention of the surveyor.

Another time the non profit said I needed to expand the surveyed area because the Governor wanted to put?ÿ a number of other agencies on the property. I said that's a lot of work, I need to get paid for that. They said, no problem, the Governor has lots of $$$. The whole project was dropped, nothing got build and I never got paid.

But then I did a little job for a church. The pastor put letters in 2 papers thanking me and sent me letter assuring me a place will be held for me upstairs. And a year later I picked up a hitcher (yes we still do that here) who said "thank you so much for helping our church". That made all the wasted time and effort?ÿworth it. And I'm an atheist!

Because you have a good heart and soul. ????

I do all of my NODA (no one dies alone) work, for free.
No one should ever have to worry about forking out $$ while their loved one is dying in my arms. NO ONE.
On the rare event when they do try to pay me, I politely refuse. If they give me a plant or food or something, those I can take.

Wendell also will provide a website/services here and there, for free. He is a bit too generous at times, but...that's my boy!! ????ÿ

Just ?ÿthinking out loud here Angel. ?ÿBut maybe when they offer you money next time , you graciously accept it and assure them that it will be spent in a way that ?ÿcontines to pay it forward in honor of the loved one. ?ÿJust spitballing here. ?ÿCarry on.

One thing I learned...do a couple of free surveys for a well known non-profit then do one for a cut-rate fee, accepting any fee even 5 bucks seems to negate all the volunteer work you did in their minds, now you are a paid vendor.

This.?ÿ I try to either do it for free or charge full freight.?ÿ Somehow anything in the middle always comes back to bite you.

Well, I have often thought that when they do, but...I took an oath when I signed up for all of this to never accept ANY cash donations. It's a part of our policy. I can accept a gift card up to $10, a small gift, plant, etc... but nothing worth a high value or anything cash/cash like. I direct them to donate it to NODA or our "Final Wishes" program, or a charity they like.

If it is personal family or friends, then I am allowed to take whatever they offer, but I still dont.
My parents were or course immune from this and I am my mothers only heir. She was definitely generous!!! And I spread that generosity on in my work. ?????ÿ

Thank you Angel.?ÿ When my father in law died he was at an inpatient Hospice.?ÿ They were great.?ÿ My mother in law sold their home and moved?ÿin with us (really a good thing).?ÿ We had a LARGE yard sale (he was almost a hoarder) and raised a couple of thousand dollars that went straight to the Hospice.?ÿ Those folks really do a good job with something that I just plain couldn't do.
