A SOLDIER
I was one of those that others did not dare to be
I went where others feared to go
And did what others failed to do
I asked nothing from those who gave nothing
And reluctantly accepted the thought of eternal loneliness
...Should I fail
I have seen the face of terror
Felt the sting of fear
And enjoyed the sweet taste of a moment's love
I have cried, pained and hoped
But most of all I have lived times
That others would say are best forgotten
At least now today
I am able to say
That I am proud of what I was
...A SOLDIER
Anon.
Thanks for that Rankin.
I'd like to take this oppurtunity to wish all of my fellow veterans on this board and any of your loved ones, past and present, that have served or are serving a Happy Veterans Day.

here's my son kris, at work a few years ago in Iraq. Now he's a weapons instructor at Parris Island; single dad with a two year old daughter....
going to the 3rd grade program at 2:30.
They will do the National Anthem 'rap' and all the traditional patriotic songs includuing "God Bleess the USA' which I really don't like. My son sings it in his Mississippi accent around the house this week.
I heard the 3rd grade chorus do the anthem rap at the 9/11 ceremony at the Courthouse in Sept. It was OK. Kids got into it.
God Blees all Vets.
rankin, if you were here, I would buy you a frozen yoghurt today with all the fixings.

Today I had lunch in a local eatery that I really like. My waiter asked if I was a veteran. I said, "yes". He tore up my ticket and said. "It's on the house". That was a first.
The times, they are a changing.

Think I've posted this here before, but it is a great tune about Vietnam.

I also took a moment to reread "In Flanders Field" and a pause in honor of the Twenty Million dead from WWI. Being Armistice Day, when the big guns of the western front fell silent on the 11th hour of the 11th day of the 11th month.

While we still have the day it would be neat to see how many of our gang are veterans!!!
My daughter just got out of the Marines, she went in May 2001, and one of our high points was having our Grandson at 9 months old while she and her husband were both in Iraq!!!
I was in the US Army Security Agency from August 1969 to March 1972 if that rings a bell, wish I was still IN!!!

We were on our way back from Vegas on Monday and I went down the concourse to get a tea. The line was long and I noticed that a young PFC was next to place his order at the register. I walked past the 15 folks in line, every one of them gave me the stink-eye for busting line. I stood next to the PFC and said "this young soldiers' order is on me and the 2nd Armored Division, no questions". He was very grateful and moved on out. I went back to the end of the line which had then grown by 5 or 6 more people. The fellow who was next to order after the PFC said something to the girl at the register. Before I knew what was going on, word was passed back the line for me to "move up". He wasn't going to order until I was next to him. He paid for my tea and said it was on him and the 1st Cav. He asked why I did what I had done and I replied that someone had done it for me once.
Half the people in line were were teary as we left.
I haven't felt that good in a long time.

Foggy, still remember last year in Brewster, you folks are very supportive of us Vets. (I was just there on vacation and went to the local program at the school)
I received a hand written thank you and a chocolate gold dollar from one of the students, a total stranger. As CPTDENT said below, times are changing. I could not, until that moment back then, ever remember being thanked for my service. It never really bothered me, but that sure felt good!
