"chiasmus"
Well that is a word I have never heard of before. I'd say it is Kentonese...;-)
But when the going does get tough, the tough get going (was that John Wayne or John Belushi or maybe Dean Wormers wifes boyfriend Eric)
My solution would be just plain ole' cynical and ask what difference does it make.
In the meantime I'll just stick to local dialect. Doesn't matter whether its North, South, East, West... people have a twang. Me, I've still got a yooper twang and enjoy it all and even laugh more when it pizzes off some of the Californica transplants who talk faster than a used car salesman. Fully unaware that nobody is listening. Can't wait to have a chat with Nate some day and ask him about his dog.
The most important thing to remember is Go Red Wings!! 😛

Very clever Wayne! 😀
I am always fascinated by different words and different languages for no reason but just for fun. 🙂
Thanks yswami. Welcome to beerleggerville. We're a pretty good bunch and make a great team.
In some of my travels I spent several days in Scotland (Edinburgh area) for some golf and fun in the old country. They speak english and for the life of me to this day I could not understand half of what people were saying due to the dialect (scottish brogue?). The beer was good and everybody had laughs, so it was an adventure to say the least and something I'll never forget.

I was wondering who said it first so I JGI'd it.
What a cesspool the internet has become, millions of 'hits' ranging from Billy Ocean to Lion King and I still don't know.

So true Vern!
I believe it was Gerald Ford who coined " when the going gets tough the tough get going". Being somewhat cynical, my first thought was political sound bite. Words and their origins are fascinating.
Here ya go

I wouldn't have gotten that in a hundred years!!!
I figured you were close with "aphorism".
Since we have our thinking caps on and learning new words, I came across a dandy while searching for a local model railroading club.
"ferroequinologist": a railfan; studier of the iron horse
Kent you nailed it!!!

I used a google search question like "Word that refers to a phrase like "ask not what your country can do .... for your country" that pulled up the wikilink to "chiasmus". Then I just searched for the vocabulary.com definition of "chiasmus" and there were the example phrases you mentioned.

Thanks Kent. I should use the same technique in the future searches.
I learned a lot of words today from many of the post. Thank you all!

Aloha, Jim:
Thanks for the site. I just bookmarked it.

In retrospect, since you knew that the word was at vocabulary.com, probably an even more efficient search term would have been:
site:vocabulary.com "ask not what your country"
When the going gets tough, the tough get going.
I'm not going to say outright that I miss Hawaii, but when you live there these are the kind of things you worry about. That and small surf.

Aloha, Kent:
That search variable found the link right away. Impressive...when one knows how to search it correctly.
