Interesting.
I wonder how long it would have taken to fall down from normal wear and tear? Guess we'll never know now.
Difficult call to nominate a bridge unsafe, then find demolition is not such a simple matter.

I wonder if the Army or whoever you'd use could have been rapidly effective? Good training for them. A real live bridge to play with!

Hmmm....I think you just hit on the best way to demolish the bridge. Wait for wear and tear and use to take it down over time. Seems like the most cost-effective, natural, and efficient answer. After it comes down on its own, you just build a new one then.

Why not use actual gun powder packed specifically to take out certain parts of the bridge by calculated value rather than rely upon an inconsistent parlor trick product.
Not all concrete is the same.........
From attempting to drill into ancient concrete, I have found most of the time it to be much stronger than design according to today's standards.
There is some mixed around Lone Star Texas that I've yet to put a dent in with my rock drill or by using a star drill and sledge.

Are you kidding, the M80's won't bring it down, but Roman Candles shot at it for 24 hours will. My guess is it will fall within 12 hours of that punishment.

I use to work for a state highway department...I know darned good and well when that bridge failed to collapse there was someone with the highway department that tried to get a sub-ordinate employee to "go out there and kick it..."

I was in Little Rock two weeks ago, and they were just about to close the old bridge and re-route all the traffic.

It's an interesting set up.
The new bridge is being built on pylons just downstream from the old, and it looks like they are going to hoist it on a couple of cranes and lift it into place on the new/refurbished supports.

Hope that plan goes better than this one......

A contractor for the Arkansas Highway and Transportation Department was unable to clear the Arkansas River channel of debris from the Broadway Bridge under the terms of a permit that closed that section of the river to barge traffic for 24 hours.

Well; it doesn't smell very good...

A bridge was taken down in Portland over the summer. They went to great pains to insure that not so much as a fleck of paint got into the river.

That's no way to take down a bridge!
