Starting a new field book I wrote the wrong FB# (73) with my sharpie on the binding and crossed it out and wrote the right number. Bugged me (he-he). A little dab of Cutter Backwoods on a napkin took care of that. After seeing how well it dissolved the ink I stop to think how smart am I dousing myself with this stuff. Fortunately worst of skeeter season is past us (but white sox just getting started).
Back in the late 60s/early 70s the USFS used to "issue" us Bug Dope (US Government issue), in little bottles. It worked, but if you had it on your fingers (kinda hard not to), it would MELT the mechanical pencils (also US Gov. Issue). In fact, it would melt/kill/dissolve just about anything.
No way it could be good for you!

It will take the markings right off a level rod. Or so I've heard;)
As I read the title, I quickly thought "alternative uses for what now?" only to have my expectations shot down with a shotgun...... oh well..... 😀 (added so hopefully nobody will take offense)
About 25 years ago I learned that sunscreen would effectively remove the color from the plastic dashboard of my 1990 F-150.
You should see what deet does to a Chevy Silverado center console.
It melts the hard plastic.

the green bottles with the black cap melted the plastic watchband from my cheapo timex and the metal back was stuck to my arm.....
"John Cameron Swayze-
I know this sounds crazy,
but mah wrist watch
is busted
beeeeyond repair...."
And the question is.................why did he always add Cameron?
And consider this: Bugs are smart enough to avoid it
Well, whatta ya know. Ol' John Cameron Swayze was a Kansas boy. His mother's maiden name was Cameron. His son was John Cameron Swayze, Jr.

Just a little FYI: Grain alcohol (Everclear) will also melt Styrofoam cups......and then the cup holder of the Chevy Silverado...;)
The aerosol bug sprays can be used as a substitute for WD40 in a bind, on metal parts, of course. The old green bottle stuff the Army had, I recall the first bottle I ever got, the label was gone from the stuff inside...
Once I received a ride in a luxury Japanese import that was only a few years old. I noticed two bare worn-spots at 10-2 on the leather steering wheel while the rest of the wheel looked like new. So taking it as a conversation piece, I asked about it.
I was told that they had a mishap with some bug deterrent and cleaned it up with paper towels along with their hands. Afterwards, they got into the car and drove to work. They had some residue of the bug stuff on their hands.
At the end of the day, the two areas where they grabbed the wheel started to peel. Along with the baking effect by the next morning the two spots were bare down to raw leather like material.
It did make a good conversation piece.

I think that's why Everclear is also known as Brain Remover...
Not sure if this is still the case, but some of the stuff Dad used about 50 years ago dissolved the paint off the tripod legs and absorbed into the skin on your neck, where it took several weeks or more to "grow out". I'm sure there were no side affects (twitch, twitch, jerk).
