As it pertains to Georgia, does anyone know how a board member appointed by a a previous governor can be replaced or removed?
It seems once these people get on the board they just continue being re-appointed and become entrenched and at least from my point of view and all those of my associates they get the big head and become arrogant. And I generally feel they should be treated like underwear and changed frequently. It seems a 2 year term would be adequate with a 4 year maximum, but we have board members who have been there for 10 years.
I have looked but I cannot find any rules, regulations, procedures or laws that deal with the removal of a sitting board member.

Our Board is created by the Governor's appointment, so?ÿhe would have the authority to?ÿ?ÿremove?ÿa member. There is probably a legislative solution. Good luck with that.?ÿ A Board member in our State is underfunded, out numbered by the Engineer Members, subject to personal liability,?ÿand is not going to win a popularity contest. The changes that do take place are generally after a new Governor takes office. Particularly if the Party affiliation changes. A significant campaign contribution was attributed to one former controversial ?ÿMember. I have spoken to Board Members who had concerns about some of their fellow Members. They were powerless to do anything. We have a present Member that has rubbed?ÿsome the wrong way, but he has put much work into our Profession. With the lack of support they get, I am not sure how many Surveyors would even be interested in serving in this capacity. The State has shown very little interest in our Board and our pitifully small renewals mostly go into the General Fund. I believe we need a separate privatized Board to effect any significant change.
I have known at least 6 present/former survey members of the BOR.?ÿ Without exception they complained about the underfunding of the Board and their inability to pursue complaints due to lack of investigators.?ÿ We (SAMSOG) investigated raising the cost of licensure to help fund the BOR but quickly found out that any additional funds would go directly to the general fund which probably would not go to the Secretary of State and even if it did would probably not go the appropriate BOR.?ÿ I have had differences of opinion with members in the past (one in particular) but unless the Governor replaces that member they are there until the next Gubernatorial election (there is one this year).?ÿ Even then the new Governor may re-appoint them.

Andy, I agree with that however my wish is that the board members served a limited term, say a maximum of 4 years. As it stands right now a person appointed to any board is almost a lifetime appointment and that is wrong no matter who it is.?ÿ
The Idaho conference was this week and it's the first one I've been to as a working surveyor.?ÿ I don't mind the surveyor members of the board but the engineer thing bugs me.?ÿ How does one go about replacing the engineers with surveyors?
Our board had a ??public board member? (non-professional member) chairing the law enforcement committee. ?ÿYou can??t make this stuff up. ?ÿWhen members of this site state things like, ?? that a surveyor should be turned into the professional practices board, or that is against the rules and the board will get them for that,.....? ?ÿI invite those people to make a hobby of reading their board minutes and if they want to get their eyes opened wide, go sit in on a few meetings and listen in and hopefully you won??t come out with the hopeless feelings I left with. ?ÿ
I posted on here a while back the discussion our law enforcement committee had about a surveyor who was reconing a site from a public street. ?ÿA homeowner turned him in for not notifying as required by law. The committee ?ÿactually discussed the fact that if the road was public and the property owner owned the underlying road bed then maybe the surveyor was required to notify. ?ÿCooler heads prevailed when the issue went to the full board but still, you can??t make this stuff up. ?ÿI mean even George Will has a national editorial column about ?ÿone of our board decisions. The structure of out Board is set vy Statute. The number of Engineers is a reflection of the ratio of Egineers to Surveyors. If they adjusted that ratio by complaints there would only be one Engineer, but that's another thread.
The only way we will change the make up is to start our own Board. Idaho Surveyors will never agree to bear the cost and our Legislature will never do the work...
Montana has a real jewel for an engineer/surveyor board member that likes to point out that he is the longest serving member.?ÿMy take is that most political appointees had to kiss somebody??s a$$ to get in a position of power that they couldn??t otherwise achieve on their own. ?ÿ
?ÿBoard members in Montana can only be appointed three consecutive 4 year terms. The best member of the Board is being termed out this year. The latest appointee told me he had volunteered for a hiking trail committee and one of the Governor's people called him and asked him if he would accept a Board of Professional Engineers and Land Surveyor's position instead since he was licensed as both an Engineer and Lan Surveyor. He's definitely a Republican and the Governor is a Democrat. Probably no such thing as a Democrat Engineer or Land Surveyor. I've never met one anyway.
