NEW AUGUSTA, Miss. (AP) — The attorney general's office says Billy Eugene Brewer, the surveyor in Greene County, has been charged with performing four surveys on properties in Perry County while being unlicensed and illegally using another surveyor's name and license.
Attorney General Jim Hood says in a news release that the 69-year-old Brewer was arrested at his home in Leakesville.
Brewer is charged with four counts of false pretense and four counts fraudulent use of identity.
Brewer was being held Friday in the Perry County jail without bond pending an initial court appearance.
WOW! Another one! They seem to be breaking down hard on Billy Eugene Brewer! Held without bond! It's about time the State Of Mississippi take surveying without a license seriously. Been seeing a lot of this the last few years. It needs to stop!
Funny to see that in the Chron.
It sounds like he was the County Surveyor in Greene county from the article?
We still have a few county surveyors that don't have to be licensed, but not many left. If they were holding the office of county surveyor in December of 1983 or 1986, (not sure about the year?) they were grandfathered in, and don't have to be licensed. Fortunately, these are about gone, and the profession will be better off when they are.
PS: I don't mean when they're dead, but when they're gone from the elected office. I guess it sounded a little harsh, but nevertheless true.
When a 69 year old man calls himself "Billy" that says something about him. Even in Mississippi.
Since surveyor isn't capitalized I read it as a surveyor from Greene County, not the County Surveyor.
Apparently the elected county surveyor, Dave
The story used the word "the", not "a".
The local beacon of truth, wisdom, and inspiration has a story complete with mug shot.
GB
Better that than "Norman".
Billy Brewer is the name of a former Ole Miss football coach who was fired in the mid 1990's for getting the school on major probation. This guy doesn't look like him.
> When a 69 year old man calls himself "Billy" that says something about him. Even in Mississippi.
at least he didn't call himself Billy Mississippi.
> When a 69 year old man calls himself "Billy" that says something about him. Even in Mississippi.
It's probably his given name and the authorities and media are reporting it as such. It doesn't look like he was interviewed, so let's assume that it's what is on his drivers license.
BTW: I am completing a survey right this minute for a "Billy". I have also done them Willie, Bobby, Junior, Robbie, Robby and Jimmy.
Unlicensed County Surveyors
We recently got legislation passed in Kentucky to require applicants for the County Surveyor position to be licensed. There was a temporary hurdle when one of the legislators wanted those already in office to be grandfathered in. After a thorough explanation, he finally understood the issue.

There is a lot more to this story. The cops don't waste their time arresting people for 4 counts of surveying without a license. I'm certain that this guy has annoyed the powers that be, one way or another, for an extended period of time.

That might be true, but that has nothing to do with his name being "Billy" now does it? That's the only point that I was addressing.
> ...that has nothing to do with his name being "Billy" now does it? ...
Not a thing.
This case was discussed at the last State Board meeting. There were more than 4 complaints discussed at that time. The AG has probably filed only on the more major cases. This all constituted "open and notorious" violations of his allowable services. Plus, remember, this is a violation of State Statute by an elected official.
Now if it was Billy Ray, or Billy Bob, then you'd have a different story!

This isn't the Billy Gene MJ was singing about.
