Hello surveyors,
What is your experience with adding a client as an additional insured on your general liability insurance. Not your errors and omissions.
Are there any potential problems, any horror stories?
Stephen
My only gripe is the added cost from the courier and not being able to include the expense on an invoice because I didn't have a clause in the contract to be reimbursed.

We do this everyday for new clients. Every major one wants to be listed.
Recently I have been asked (twice) to also add clients to Prof. Liability and Auto Liability policies.
Insurance agents said absolutely not. "Well you could sell them your truck and then they could insure it."

Never a problem and most contractors and/or bigger A/E firms want to be named. Especially for workers comp. 100's of times. It has never cost me a penny, aside from the price of the paper and ink to print it, and my time on the phone or email to give them the client information. If your carrier charges you, find another agent.
In terms of potential problems, I would think you've already got that covered by virtue of just doing the job correct in the first place. Problem solved.
How about partial and final waivers? I had a contractor recently want a final waiver, but he forgot to put the check in the envelope...., but we sorted that out PDQ
Larry,
Adding additional insureds to E & O is certainly not to be done. Why is it so bad to add a client to the Automobile Policy? The way that I am understanding this is that the client wants to be indemnified against any negligence or harm that I may do to him on this project by way of "automobile".
Stephen
We do this routinely and there is never any charge whatsoever. The purpose is to notify the additional insureds in the event that you default or lose coverage. its just a request to be added to a mailing list...
Actually with the additional insured added the entity or person becomes covered under your policy. Should something happen and they are used the suing parties can come after every insurance policy the additional insured is on. It gives the additional insured additional coverage without them spending one cent.
Adding additional insureds also opens you and your business to being a party in any suit they are a party of.
Ask any attorney or insurance agent.

You should clarify "Should something happen".
An individual or company named as an additional insured would be protected under the surveyor's business owners policy in the event that the additional insured was sued as a result of an error or accident caused by the surveyor. Many business owner policies automatically include additional insured status stipulated by the contract, with no endorsement required.
Additional insured requirements are SOP.

Not only is adding insureds to E&O not to be done, it can't be done. Professional Liability insurance covers your professional acts, errors and omissions. Your contractor or client will not be surveying and therefore can not be covered.
I can't get medical malpractice insurance because I'm not a doctor.

They can buy all the insurance they want, but I am not giving anything away, insurance included.

Additional Insured and Certificates of Insurance ....
are 2 different animals. In most cases what you are really being asked for is a Certificate of Insurance and you are being asked for that because their insurance company requires them to do that. And as noted above, if you drop the coverage the notifications go out to those that have asked for a COI.
