Hello all! I am GNSS equipment enthusiast/hobbyist, and I work adjacent to it - I'm the GIS Administrator for a municipal department of engineering, and I support and maintain the GNSS equipment for the department as well as the city's control points. I have always enjoyed tinkering with older electronics equipment, computers and radios especially, and have in the past year or so begun to explore older GNSS equipment, when it's available and I can afford it.

I recently picked up an Ashtech Z-12 (well, the military variant ZY-12) and have been having a blast poking at it, so far it seems to perform incredibly well - but I haven't been able to get it connected to a computer. The unit arrived without any cables, which is how things usually go with this kind of surplus gear. So far that has been fine, because the front panel is very powerful, but I want to use this for geodetic measurements, which means I need to be able to pull data off via RS232, and I'd also like to be able to configure it from a computer and also configure it as a reference clock to compare with my other GPS clocks.

My usual approach here is to match up my own wiring harness, but I haven't had any luck. I haven't had any luck putting my scope on the four Tx pins, either. I have tried enabling NMEA messages for all the ports, individually and in groups, with different baud rates, frequencies, and sentences - all to no avail, unfortunately. I've double checked my settings on the PC and scope, and verified that  but still feel like I'm missing something. At this point I feel like my best chance is to get a real serial cable so that I can cancel that out for certain. Oh - well, the batteries are dead, but I have a new set on order - I don't think they would cause something this specific, but who knows?

So, if anyone here still has a serial cable, and any other Z-12 stuff laying around that they want to part with, please, let me know! This equipment is still quite capable and I'd love to keep it alive.

And if anyone is curious about what one looks like under the hood, I've been taking photos. The crypto module is really something - and dead, of course.

Thanks!
