I remember Sopris Engineering from many years ago. I used to sell / support Autodesk and Softdesk products to Yancy. Glad to hear that you are all still doing well.

Please tell Yancy that Ric Moore from (Sage Consultants aka Data and Resource Tracking in Camarillo, CA) said hello.

Ric

Of course you've had a hard time finding someone. Put "minimum 15 years experience" in there and maybe you'd have better luck.

Also put in the ad what the minimum pay will be with said experience.

These kinda ads really burn me up. Why is someone who has been exclusively working with carlson and topcon software not up to snuff? You don't want to train them? There is no perfect hire, but there are perfectly trainable guys and gals out there who would probably be great employees for your firm. Also you get to train them in the way you do everything, not just on the software.

Rant off.

iheartdirtwork, (good nickname...)

That's a little unfair. I might look for some help that, ideally, can hit the ground running using a particular equipment type or software type. (by "I" I mean the employer...not that that is my ad) Maybe I even want someone who has that expertise so they can train other employees in that hard- or soft-ware. Maybe I will take all resumes and end up hiring someone who I think can pick it up well. Isn't if fair for the guy that is looking for the help to let the potential candidates know what his preferred experience or background would be?

Does anyone actually pay attention to the job requirements when they send their resume in for an advertised position. Doesn't matter what I advertise for, I get flooded with resumes that are either vastly over or under qualified for the job.

I think that a person who could meet all these qualifications would be a PLS, or ready to be one, and I know a lot of PLS's who could not qualify for this job. 3 years experience is not going to cut it.

Yep...you and iheart are right. I stand corrected. I wasn't thinking about the experience so much as them wanting what they want.

Nope that's not it. I don't think I've seen a resume from someone out of work in 18 months.

We're pretty much back to what economists used to consider the full employment rate before the real estate bubble here. Most of the resumes I see are from guys who jump firms every two years or from outside the U.S.

"In the United States a man builds a house in which to spend his old age, and he sells it before the roof is on; he plants a garden and lets it just as the trees are coming into bearing; he brings a field into tillage and leaves other men to gather the crops; he embraces a profession and gives it up; he settles in a place, which he soon afterwards leaves to carry his changeable longings elsewhere.

If his private affairs leave him any leisure, he instantly plunges into the vortex of politics; and if at the end of a year of unremitting labor he finds he has a few days' vacation, his eager curiosity whirls him over the vast extent of the United States, and he will travel fifteen hundred miles in a few days to shake off his happiness. Death at length overtakes him, but it is before he is weary of his bootless chase of that complete felicity which forever escapes him."

James,

"I don't think I've seen a resume from someone out of work in 18 months."

I'll send you mine. I've been unemployed for almost 2 years. I live in the middle of Popped-Bubble, Dead Central. Where you at? I've been looking around for a nice Pre-Bubble Location to move to.

Dave

James,

"Does anyone actually pay attention to the job requirements when they send their resume in for an advertised position."

Yup. I do. I can even read between the lines, like when an employer wants someone with ten years experience for an "entry level" position. (I swear. I see 'em all the time.)

Not to hijack the post, but I do not see a quote by that author very often. Well done.

When I send out a resume, I am one who does pay attention to how qualified I am for the position. I do not send out resumes willy-nilly to just anything.

Not to turn political, but as to the so called unemployment rate, there are some serious holes in the reported data. Yes, more people are getting back to work, but many of them have found jobs well below their skill level. The last time I saw it reported, the majority of created jobs are part time and low pay (retail and food service). In other words, while, yes, they are technically employed, they are still can not pay their bills. There are many people who are not counted for various reasons, such as they just gave up looking. Some took early social security for lack of being able to find a job.

I would beg to differ. Though things have improved, I do not believe we are "pretty much" back to pre "recession" levels. I personally know people who are still looking for work, and others who are under employed in my area. In my area anyway, there still are not enough living wage positions available for those who want them, even though the reported unemployment numbers are down quite a bit from a few years ago. The numbers don't accurately reflect the people who simply gave up looking and those who need a better paying position to actually meet financial obligations without federal/state subsidies.

I think there are still bubbles of "good" and bubbles of "worse" which vary greatly between states.

"Over qualified for a position" has to be the stupidest term that anyone has ever used on me. What the hell does that mean? Do you not think that I have already done my homework and know what the position pays and that figure is fine with me? If the job pays nothing I do not waste my time applying. Next time an "over qualified" applicant comes in,talk to them in depth. You may get a bargain!!
