When I was going to college that would not have been a bad job to have.

Where is he located? With the furloughs looming that job sounds interesting. I just need 2 jobs like that is the only problem.

I can only assume that you would find yourself in the awkward position of having to remind the employer that 60 days has passed since your start date.

There is a time and place for everything though, a job like this can work like hamburger helper for a unemployment claim, stretching it out long enough to find sustaining work and keeping a person in this rewarding career path, pardon me, Profession.

I would rather chain for some cheap bastard than flip burgers.

How is this guy a cheap bastard? That is pretty much the going rate for a rodman with NO experience in this area. When times are slow, you don't need someone 40 hours per week. It is hard to find someone to only work a couple days per week. It could be a solo guy like myself (it isn't) that works in the field 2 days and the office 3 days, because every day of field work generates 2 days of office work. It is more than minimum wage and as someone else said, helps out with someone collecting unemployment (which is usually half of your normal pay)

I have a friend (not me) that has a small survey company that has used this sort of ad fairly successfully. It gets someone in the door so he can check them out on the job and see if they fit. If it doesn't work, no harm, no foul. I have actually considered doing the same sort of thing on occasion.

no no no, that's sixty days that we actually work. At two days a week that might take a while. Plus we don't count time driving home from the job. Or days that are less than 12 hours. Or time spent drinking water!

well, that could be like 500/month take home for working two days a week.. I know a buddy that works the night shift all month at his job just so he can earn an extra 500/month in overtime.

Why is everyone so down on this guy?? he's not asking for a licensed surveyor, he's asking for an entry level helper.

I meant "cheap bastard" in only the most enduring terms.

Of course we can speculate that perhaps the person placing the add is a solo operator working on a thin margin, perhaps the kind of guy who will work out as a great mentor to the student chainman, bringing him along in the classic tradition.

However, the only evidence that we have with which to evaluate the employer is that he expects full on-call flexibility for what in my area and presumably that of the OP constitutes as low pay.

I have found as I am sure many others have found that the rate of pay is far from the only consideration when it comes to employers, it is however often a good indicator of how a employer will treat you in other respects as well.

As for the rate of pay, 9 dollars per hour is less than minimum wage here in Washington, which classifies it as low in my estimation.

I agree. I don't see why this is so bad. I have 1 full time employee and 1 part time employee who's in college. It works great for me to be able to dedicate a few days a week to office work and marketing while they're out doing some field work. It's possible this guy's needing to do the same or maybe he's solo and wants some extra help for the spring/summer. My 2 cents.

Wes

heck, I fell into surveying looking for a drafting job. I had NO CLUE why I was standing in the middle of an Illinois corn field in the blazing heat trying to hold this stupid bubble steady while the bugs were eating me. I HATED IT!! but then, after I started reading up and learning what was going on, I fell in love with it.

soooooo, you never know who you might fire up and turn into a lifetime surveyor!

I'm glad to see that everyone here is doing an excellent job running their businesses and is making more money than they can stand. Warren Buffett should be calling you any minute now asking for advice.

I'm guessing that a starting rate of $9/Hr isn't too bad considering an individual will cap out around $30/Hr after 10 years experience, obtaining professional license and likely having obtained a college degree

No offense taken to the cheap bastard, as I probably am one myself. Minimum wage in my area is $7.25 per hour, so I usually start people out at $8. If they have half a brain, pretty soon they are making $9. But then again, lot surveys are going for around $800 each in this area as well. I guess everything is relative to area. [sarcasm]Plus, our surveys are harder since everything isn't square[/sarcasm] 😛
