Chapter 1 is a quick read and instructive for a layman like me, but be sure to read the opening paragraphs of Chapter 2. You may be hooked after that.

https://books.google.com/books?id=IOcsAAAAYAAJ&printsec=frontcover&dq=prairie+surveyor&hl=en&newbks=1&newbks_redir=0&sa=X&ved=2ahUKEwj635-NndTnAhWwknIEHRKMCEYQ6AEwBHoECAgQAg#v=onepage&q=prairie%20surveyor&f=false

Apparently, they don't make young surveyors like they used to.

On page 17 he says he would measure from the blaze.?ÿ Was it not the practice to give distances from the center of the tree?

@bill93

More precisely it would be 'to' the center of the tree.

As always...it depends!

Here in the Great Basin, PLSS (Section Township Range) Bearing Trees, are NORMALLY measured to the "center of the tree," however, Mineral Survey Bearing Trees are USUALLY measured to the "face of the blaze." Of course there are exceptions to every rule, and your mileage may vary.

The original surveyor measured TO the tree.?ÿ The retracing surveyor measures FROM the tree.

@bill93

I think he said to the center of the blazed trunk. Pretty good piece of geometry, though.

Probably he was right but it could be taken either way.

For a bit of homebrew leveling, look at chapter 23. Chapter 22 sets it up -- an aqueduct from the spring to the house.

@bill93

In the context of the story you are correct. I should have read it before posting.
