lol, I dont really worry too much about what offends others on a message board. Particularly when they seem to take offense to many peoples comments. This isnt a formal place and I have seen much worse comments regarding cheapo clients like this church.

Well I'm offended by the fact that you are not worried about what offends others.[/sarcasm]

Let me rock the boat a little. I've donated many surveys to churches. One thing to remember is that the church may have 100+ members. That's 100+ potential clients! They WILL remember your generosity. Do as Larry P. says, give them an invoice for the full amount, less what ever you want to donate. 10%, 50% or 100%. Doesn't matter, they will remember. This is from the perspective of a small town guy where everyone knows everyone. I can't count the number of clients I have gained. Of course, I don't do it for that reason, I am a Christian and it just gives me the warm and fuzzies to put on the invoice "use my donation to help the needy".

Yes. But, I would not let it show outwardly. Meanwhile, I would do precisely what I had intended to do when I made my offer to the client. No conversation required. Just do what you need to do and do it well. Bill accordingly.

I think a lot of us feel angry about people criticizing our costs. For myself, this is because of two reasons:

1: Because of the current economy, every bid that goes out the door is for less than we valued ourselves in the past. This isn't always completely true, but it often feels that way. (Resentment. )

Or

2: Because I have a hard time telling an 80 year old man being harassed by his neighbor that he needs my (to him expensive) services. (Guilt)

Most of the time, though, I realize no one is forcing me to do any of this, and am grateful for my work.

And I would tell the guy, they are cheaper than me because I am better. Then I would prove it, if only to myself.
