Approved for a residential job and this is the way I get notified.
Ok, Let's get it started. You should have all you need to get the permit set ready once the as built field work is done. Can you get that turned around for me this week and turned into the city? Keep in mind if you will, that we have had permits sets done for quit a bit less in the past, but crews are not available. I know time is money, but just asking to keep the cost down if at all possible.
Or am I just in an ill mood? *Note* I donated about $3,000 worth of my services to his church a couple of years ago.
naah snoop, dont let the bastards get to ya!
I would never donate services or anything else to a "church". They forget and then expect more, as if they are entitled to free stuff.
:good:
i am learning this lesson.
The same type will pay whatever it takes for items such as concrete, drywall, plumbing, etc, without telling them to keep costs low, but make such statements to a surveyor as if it is just necessary work with no real benefit to them.
So, no one else can do it cheaper this week. I would just quote him normal fees, half now, for 3 week delivery, twice normal fees for 2 week delivery, thrice normal fees for this week full fee and contract in hand before the end of the day.
Let him work out his priorities with valid options.
If he calls back, you earn your living. If he doesn't, you ain't lost a dime.
Anyone who want's you to forgo profit so they can add to their profit is by definition not a client you want on your list. You will be bled to death by a thousand cuts with a rep like that.
My grocer won't drop a dime off the cost of a spud for my table because I didn't make a profit to pay full price.
YEEEESSSSS!! I usually up my fees for people I go to church with. I don't want the hassle of that all mighty 'Expectation' of things for nothing. If they agree to my fee then they will get my services, but usually I tell them so much up front they get gun shy. Better that than having falling outs with people, and then trying to go to church with them!!!
I donated Time, Talent and Treasure to the church ONCE. The church has closed and is up for sale. Yup, Pissed me right off; I'm still DAMNED!
I've had the opposite experience. First church I used to loan my Schony out (free) to find grave site pins. I ended up laying out new cemetery plots along with boundary work for additional land purchased and they were more than willing to pay, didn't even ask for an estimate. Second church (I had no connection with), I donated a residential lot survey. I have since done a couple of small boundaries for them and they paid standard fees with no question.
1st clue you're screwed...IT'S FOR THE CHURCH.
I did the layout for a local mosque once for free; also computed the correct azimuth to Mecca (Ka'ba) and figured that into the orientation for their house of worship. Folks were appreciative, later took me to lunch.
One of the first lessons to learn is you never ever do "free" work.
Which is not to say you never donate work to worthy causes.
Over the years I have donated work to many local causes (Hospice House, Battered womens shelter, and various churches). But, you always, always, always let the client know the value of what you did.
Give the client an invoice for the full value of the work. Then, when you are so inclined, give a donation in the form of a reduction in the invoice amount.

Would this piss you off? - AGREE 100%
There are a few simple facts here that some have picked up on.
One not picked out is according to their doctrines God is a patient God. He doesn't expect things to be done in miracle time when we don't need to and THIS is a notion the churches seem to forget.
I imagine also if you 'donated' time (in kind hours and probably out of pocket costs) then when you fronted at church next Sunday someone would stand and rattle the plate or bag or whatever they call 'the offering plate' at you and perhaps frown when you left your hands in your pocket, or picked it up and passed it on.
(I've done a deal of work for churches over the years and mostly paid)
If that gets up Christians noses then GOOD, cos I'm one, and YES that sort of thing 'pisses me off' BIGTIME.
And this is supposed to be a time of what? - according to the 'traditions' some hold dear to.
Moderator feel free to cut this. Just having my 2 bobs worth.
WOW, why all the anger in this post. I read these earlier but waited to reply to collect my thoughts. There seems to be alot of "blanket" statements negative to the "church". I have done many "free" work or "pro bona" work for churches, habitat, ect. every time was rewarding. If anger arrises just because this is a church requesting it then maybe one should look at ones self
> 1st clue you're screwed...IT'S FOR THE CHURCH.
WOW
> naah snoop, dont let the bastards get to ya!
and then our profession wonders why we are looked upon as non professionals,,LOL,,,GEEZ, almost ashamed to be a Surveyor.
what exactly are you embarassed by? the fact that I told him not to worry about it or that you dont like me referring to a client whining about price before a job even starts in a derogatory manner? I didnt tell him to speak to the client that way...
The Church is a business, never forget that.
oh, I see..its because its a church...lol, I didnt see that, maybe snoop edited his post while I was replying...I might not of used the word bastards in regards to a church, but I dont believe in donating work. Churches have a reputation for wanting everyone to work for free...wonder how they got that?
