Hello Everyone

Thanks for the wonderful interactive forum , i am looking for a videos or a small book that explain the relation between GRID and GROUND coordinate systems , and how to work with GPS grid points using TotalStation applying the Scalefactor, what will be changed for the TS and how it will measure and calculate distance in this case when we uses Scalefactor.
then may you provide me with a simple geodesy book that talks about most the topic that is important for a surveying and geomatics engineer .

Thanks too much

Jihad

https://www.amazon.com/GPS-Land-Surveyors-Fourth-Sickle/dp/146658310X&apos ;">GPS for Land Surveyors, 4th Edition. Not exactly simple, but about as simple as it gets. Not super cheap either, but not the worst.

Beside that a google search of "Simple geodesy" yields lots of bits and pieces, including some stuff on the NGS website. There are also lots of youtubes.

And you might try going through some of https://www.e-education.psu.edu/geog862/&apos ;">Penn State's courseware.

Most basic surveying books treat projection scale factor and elevation factor for converting between grid and ground.

I recommend the Wolf & Ghilani text, and at one time an older edition was available as pdf. However, I like printed text books, and you can often find a slightly less-than-latest edition very cheap.

The latest Trimble Power Hour was on Grid versus Ground coordinates. It's call "Defining and Working with Grid and Ground Coordinates". Although focused on Trimble hardware and software, the presenter also discusses the general principles. The recording of the webinar was just posted yesterday or today http://infogeospatial.trimble.com/Trimble-Geospatial-Webinars.html&apos ;">here. Scroll down to the Webinar Archives and it's the first one.

FWIW,

I like the Elithorp and Findorff text "Geodesy of Geomatics and GIS Professionals" the second edition (linked below) was published in 2009. It does not explicitly deal with state plane coordinates and the ground-grid issue. Much US-specific content.

http://www.xanedu.com/higher-education/educators/custom-books-catalog/geodesy-for-geomatics-and-gis-professionals/

The official NGS manual on the US State Plane Coordinate System is available free as a PDF. Link is below.

https://www.ngs.noaa.gov/PUBS_LIB/ManualNOSNGS5.pdf

A more venerable document (dated 1950) is here: https://www.ngs.noaa.gov/PUBS_LIB/StatePlaneCoordinatesInRouteSurveying_CGS.pdf

Using the base address https://www.ngs.noaa.gov/PUBS_LIB/ will lead to more relevant NGS documents.

Like Bill93, I like the Wolf/Ghilani (now Ghilani/Wolf) text. I also share his preference for printed versions. In any event, the lengthy link below is to a free version of the 14th edition of the Elementary Surveying textbook by Dr C. Ghilani. A quick search did not find earlier editions without the obnoxious registration requirement that this site does. Perhaps you will have better luck.
