I was on the survey crew at 12 years old. I was a substitute teacher for a year after college. When other kids were delivering papers, I was running transit. My summer vacation was always supposed to be a couple weeks off but that turned into the 2 days off. The first day of summer and the last day of summer. My mom got me the day to go school clothes shopping.
working as a summertime janitor at my school to pay tuition. my father had passed, and mum didn't want to see us leave our school.
amazing how dirty we were in an all boys, Catholic, military school.
i just kept reminding myself what my father used to say, 'I'll pick s%*t with the chickens if that is what keeps my family going'
the full time janitors even convinced my brother to go inside and clean the boiler, when he came out, he had gotten cut in a couple places (many sharp edges in there), but we couldn't see blood through all of the carbon
housekeeping people in general have it pretty tough
Prior to working for a DOT, I would have said that my job selling cars was probably my worst. But my experience with the DOT left me with a sad feeling... I only lasted a few months because it was far outside my ethics to get paid for not working. When I was on the clock, I wanted to be productive -- if there was "nothing" to do, many of my co-workers would tell me to relax and sit down or something. That's just not right. If I did that, I would feel guilty just walking around town, knowing that each one of the people around me was contributing to my salary for doing nothing. I don't know how anyone can live with themselves doing that.
So after having to work to find work, I caved and left. Life was tough for quite awhile after that, as it was hard to find a job or other work. But I still stand by my decision to this day.

What is the worst job you've had ? second thoughts
the worst job i ever had was when i didn't have one...
My worst job ever was as a prison guard. That was the longest 8 years of my life. I looked at the clock so much that it seemed to move backwards. Booorrrring!! Thats what made me go to college and start surveying. My longest and worst days surveying have gone by faster than 1 hour in there.
That being said, I'm making $20k less and would have been able to retire in 5 years at 46 years old. Oh well, I'd rather love my job.
Wasn't me, but a fellow surveyor told me he had a job collecting hog semen for artificial insemination. I'd rate that right up there. I've done most all kinds of farm work, but nothing quite that bad.
You Win!
I try to teach my kids a good work ethic, but your parents may have been overachievers! 😉
Will read your post to the next child that complains about all the work they have to do before going "out to play".
Which one to chose???
Beer can fix the monotony.
Surveying is my favorite job! I can't think of having to do anything else...even when knee deep in human excrement getting that invert.
It's been said above, but the absolute worse thing is to not have a job.
