20 years in the making in Botetourt County, VA.
The memorial site is less than an hour from me, and Smithfield at Virginia Tech is about 15 minutes from me.
I have forwarded these articles to my local Virginia Association of Surveyors officers in case they would want to contribute something.
Thank you.

Interesting. When I was at Army Map Service all the buildings were named after Topographic Engineer Officers, primarily from the Revolutionary War. I don't remember that name ...
There was Erskine, Robideau, Abair, Freemont, and a couple more; perhaps Preston was one of them.

Cliff,
When were you at the Army Map Service? I did a hitch as a photogrammetrist/analyst back when they went by DMA. I'm guessing that all of those buildings are long gone now. NGA moved out several years ago.
I wonder if the John B. Preston, the first Surveyor General of the
Oregon Territory is related to the Colonel?
November 1968 thru November 1971 - last two months of AMS and the entire existence of TOPOCOM. It became DMA H/TC in January 1972. Was at ACIC (as a civilian) in 1967-1968.
