2 daughters have Iphones and I was very taken with Theodolite application.
I'm not really wanting Iphone and am interested in some of the latest smartphones running Android.
Is there a comparable app to Theodolite?
I found some interesting other maths apps but suggest a thread or place on this forum for users to post comments, links etc of apllications that really do work and are tried and true.
I see comments elsewhere where one user can't get it to work on their phone whilst others can, so expect there are compatability issues.

Other daughter has an HTC velocity and I was very impressed with the camera in the brief playing indoors last night. Can't see it ever replacing my Canon though, but it has its very valid place.
regards
Richard

Useful Andoid apps - Ideas please

Wendell,

Yes, I CAN read. the subject line is "Useful Andoid apps - Ideas please"

But . . . having a brilliant mind for the obvious, and knowing next to nothing about anything, and realizing that a MOST of the things I do know are WRONG,

DO ALMOST ALL SUCH THINGS WORK ON BOTH THE IPHONE AND DROID?

How do I know what works on which? or is it which works on what? Well, I have an iPhone, so I don't want to purchase or try to load something that is for the Droid on to it.

Any help would be appreciated. Any slurrrrrrrrrrrs from other posters regarding my metality will only be regarded as good clean fun. I just am NOT tech savvy.

thanx,

Geezer:-P

Yes, these are all for Android phones. Not iPhone. iPhone does not run Android.

Android apps won't run on the iPhone, and vice-versa. Many of the popular apps are available for both, but iPhone is only through the iTunes store, at different links. It may be best to keep iPhone app links in a different thread to avoid confusion.

Wendell,

Obvioulsy if i buy something from Apple, it will be for the iphone.

Do other peoples write apps for the iphone as well.

Is there a difference in the "extension" or something that would indicate which one it will work on?

thanx,

Geezer

For those currently ignorant in such things

Geezer I should have said - I'm an ignorant bloke when it comes to this sort of stuff.
Sit me up with a GPS and a Total station and Windows and ...., and all is well.
This is a NEW venture for a bloke that said' he would never (as in ever) want one of those new fangled devices'. I love my simple phone that has real numbers you push, no internet connection and no distractions and runs on the sniff of an Li battery.
What took me to this place was the simple and yet very powerful applications that do stuff we do a lot of in surveying and then I started seeing other things that they do that whilst bordering on the gimicky have serious application in the right arena.
Just to encourage all other non tech savy bods to speak up. I'll be the first to learn too.
thanks

In my limited experience, the surest indicators are that iPhone apps are only available through iTunes or the Apple App Store, while Android apps are only available from the Android Market (now known as the Google Play Store).

While it is a good practice to use the Market/Play for finding Android apps, you can download apps outside the store (extension .apk). However, you need to be VERY careful when doing this. The Find-A-Control app I linked above is a good example of an app acquired outside the official store. The Amazon App Store is also considered an "outside source" for Android apps.

Correct. And all the links in this thread won't work on the iphone.

Well.. not totally correct since there is software on my site that runs on windows CE & Pocket PC, which is a whole different operating system which has been out for 13 years, and is what most data collectors currently run.

Android is very powerful. The iphone/ipad won't hook to any GPS or total stations or robots since its bluetooth doesn't suppoort serial port profile, so its not nearly as good for surveyors.

Useful Andoid apps - Ideas please

Wendell, or anyone else.

I hope you can help me out.

Last Saturday I went into Verizon to buy an Android Bionic. I was talked into buying the iPhone 4S: Was told the iphone is more stable, has longer battery life, and just plain works all the time - Droids (I was told) are fickle - VERY powerful, but just sometimes get tired of all that power and quit. Not a big deal, they can be restarted, but kind of an annoyance.

Anyway, I bought the iPhone. But . . . I AM a surveyor! and the only reason I bought the thing was coz I had heard bout some of the neat programs available of these kinds of phones (didn't know dif between the two).
Now it seems like what I am reading in this post is that the cutsey toys like you mentioned (and others) are NOT available for the iphone.
I still have time to take the iPhone back and get the Droid - $35 restocking fee.

Advice?????

thanx,

geezer:-(

Generally, I have found that there are some amazing apps available for the iPhone. Most of the time, I can find the equivalent for Android and then some. However, that has just been my experience and I have never owned an iPhone. I have used an iPod Touch though, which is basically an iPhone without the phone, and I didn't like how "tied down" it is... that is, I feel like I have more flexibility and usefulness with an Android phone. Again though, that is just my experience.

It's like comparing a Mac to a Windows PC. The Mac is REALLY AWESOME but is limited in terms of flexibility and overall adoption by end users. Only Apple can make Macs but many manufacturers can make Windows PCs, and the same is true for iPhones and Android phones. Windows is more flexible but that does come at a certain price because of it's wide adoption. It's a little different in the iPhone/Android arena though because the iPhone has done so well in terms of market share.

But for the same reasons I generally prefer Windows PCs over Macs, I prefer Android phones over iPhones. I love the quality that automatically comes with Apple products, but my choices are limited to one. With Android, I can choose from a large array of phones.

I will say, however, that any version of Android prior to ICS (Ice Cream Sandwich) is far inferior to ICS. I have a Samsung Galaxy Nexus through Verizon that runs ICS and WOW am I impressed.

It's true that the power that comes with it uses more battery. But I got the extended battery and use an app called "Juice Defender Ultimate", which optimizes the phone's services for better battery life. However, my screen is massive compared to the iPhone, and the battery stats tell me that it's the biggest offender in terms of battery life, so that makes sense. I use a custom ROM that helps in that regard as well.

xyz - coordinates

thanks for all these suggestions, much appreciated.

Does xyz show only lat/ long or WGS coords? I'd prefer the latter as they are more meaningful for me.

xyz - coordinates

I'm not sure what you mean by xyz. Triangulate shows only lat/lon. Other software we have gives NAD83 state plane or utm or localize to your own system.

Find-a-control

I don't know that answer to your android app, but if you give the text of the error I might have some ideas.
There is a windows website to show in your browser the same NGS control overlaid on a google map that I like better at www.surveying.org and you get to use your large full screen and lots more options. Check the box for NGS control.

I'm interested in the Find-A-Control, but it doesn't seem to want to load into my phone.

Obviously I'm not doing something right, but I have it downloaded and unzipped.
