I've looked thru and/or deciphered a lot of old field books, back to the 30s, but I am curious as to what the top symbol is for the crewmember named "G. SHEMA".

I had come to the conclusion it is a candle, to indicate they were turning angles after sunset and Shema was responsible for the target light... but then I noticed the date as August 1984.

Anyone else? Let me know.

I guess G. Shema wasn't a P.C. person.

I knew the man...no way was he working after dark! Genie?

Seriously, he was an older guy, heavy, didn't do much of anything except supervise and scream loudly.

I worked mostly on a different crew, but I did work with him, never saw that symbol before.

I have notes with an infinity symbol (sideways 8). I assume it means chainman?

Looks like he was the one to light the fire under the rest of the crew.

The field book is dated 1984, that can't be a quill pen and ink well.. can it?

I could be wrong, but I think that means he was a firecracker [emoji91]

Hmmm...I never would have thought of that, but maybe so. It does seem to have them listed in order of Hierarchy, with the rodman @ the bottom.

Well that narrows it down (to about a million party chiefs). 😉

This is the same symbol I was mumbling about to you a few months ago John. I saw the photo on my phone again and have still been wondering.

If it is for the pen, then I guess Shema wrote while Snyder held the field book?

Feather in hat? or a chief's feather? That is the summer I got married. I worked from May when school was out until my wedding, which was July 28. Then I headed back to Mexico to school, driving with my wife (still married, 32 years later). But that summer I almost always either had my own crew or was on with Bob Miller as party chief. Seven man crew-those were the days!
