One: Am I the only one who pronounces GPS as a word Jips or Gyps? We should all start doing that. It's easier and it's only a matter of time until the rest of the world does.
Two: Check out this cool image on Google Earth: N64D03'01" W22D37'04".

Problem is GPS is out of style it's GNSS now so why not skip right to GeNeSiS?
You've answered your own question. 😉
🙂
When people hear you say "Gee P. Ess" they know it's an acronym for something. When all they hear is "Gyps" it sounds like government jargon -- I'm thinking back to when I first heard some FEMA honcho yakking about "loh-mahs" and "lags."
Wonder Woman
That is a rare photo of Wonder Woman escorting a flight. Must have been some really important people on that plane.
The problem with giving nicknames to initials is that they frequently make changes in one or more of the initials. Then a new nickname must be proposed, accepted and promulgated, while also pointing out that this is the newer term for whatever it was previously. The government is famous for changing such initials on a bi-monthly basis.
Some of my high school buddies went on to attend what they called NickJick or NCCJC. It became NCCC. I've never heard it called NickKick or anything similar. The old geezers who call it NickJick date themselves as soon as they say it.
I enjoy hearing alumni of various universities as they pronounce their own preference for the shorter form of their home school. One of my favorites was an alumni of Virginia Polytechnic Institute and State University. She favored a Southern-twanged, sneeze-like, blur of VPISU. Not Virginia Tech. Not even Veepeeaiyee, which is more like vuhpuhaah.
Cool, I learned how to do the degree symbol on iPad, hold down the zero key and slide up to the degree symbol.
I have heard and occasionally used "jips" which is probably not a good idea. There is a term "Gypo" logger that I heard from a former boss who also used "jips" because it is considered to be a racial slur (Gypsie), similar to gyp. One of our forest managers advised me to not use the term because it is offensive so I don't use it. It refers to licensed logging contractors.
We just refer to it as Global Positioning Sometimes.
