My main robotic crew party chief Scott is still getting used to the "new to us" Trimble 5600 robot with the TSCe data collector.
When we got it our local dealer loaded some software on the dc so that we can export our topos with our usual line work commands to a Softdesk *.fbk file.
Scott set up in his back yard & shot a little test topo with line work & exported the *.fbk file & it worked great!
Then he went out to do a real topo job. About halfway through the 1,000 shot job the dc gave him some sort of error (he can not remember the exact wording) about saving his data. It locked up & he had to reboot.
He finished the job & tried to export the *.fbk file & the dc would not allow the export. It did however allow a *.csv export, so we did get the points, just no line work.
Any ideas ?
Thanks !
Is there any extra coding (spaces, letters) that the error or reboot put into the fbk? go through the list and make sure there is nothing extra.......
Brad,
Trimble Custom Style Sheets for TSC
This link takes you to the Trimble site, the page with all kinds of custom exports. (FBK was updated july 2010).
Normally you don't lose data or files when you reboot.
Another possibility is that he only looked at the fixed format exports (csv) and not at the custom exports (fbk).
Here you can download the Trimble Ascii File generator utility
Trimble Ascii File Generator Utility
It lets you make the same custom export files (FBk) as on the dc, but then on your desktop pc. All you need is your downloaded job file.
When job files are to large you can't process them on the dc (memmory issue), then your only option is the second link.

Okay Christ
First I extracted the FBK utility from your first link.
Then I installed the ASCII File Converter progrram & get the following error:
(By the way Thank You Very Much for helping !)

Okay Christ
Brad,
let me see,
looks as if the software tries to convert the job first to a jobxml, did not have this error before.
as input you can choose for .job files or jobxml files
what did you select as input, .job file or .jxl - I think you can change the file extension in the input window ...
can you try the conversion from job to jobxml, should be an option in the export box
and then using the jxl as input for an fbk export.
or you could send me the file, christof[dot]lambrecht1[at]telenet[dot]be
I could have a try

Thanks brother, I will email the job file to you right away.
After we are done with this I will be hoisting a beer (or three) here in your honor.
I am also currently downloading Trimble Link for Land Desktop 2007...
Trimble Link
I do remember a problem we once had,
there was somewhere a CTRL character entered in the code or note field, once removerd on the TSC2 and downloaded again the problem was solved,
just a guess,
I'll have a look at your file,
chr.
Trimble Link
No problems so far,
have a fbk, and some other files for you on the mail.
about the fbk, there were two options (about corrections) I accepted the defaults, first window YES , second NO

progress
I think we are getting somewhere...
In windows I changed the *.job extension to *.jxl & the re ran the ASCII utility & got this error message:

Looks like we need to find the invalid character in the job file.
I tried to view the *.job file in Notepad, that did not work.
Is my only option to view it on the actual data collector?
progress
Brad...this is a known issue with the fbk file converter, and lots of others of the custom style sheet reports.
The collector does not have enough power to convert large files onboard the collector. This is true of the TSCe, TSC2 and even the new TSC3.
The solution is to download the ASCII file generator program (link above) and run it on your computer.
progress
Strange ...
changing the file extension from .job (wich is a binary file) to .jxl (wich is an ascii file) is not a good idea i think, it makes no sense binary & ascii.
the invalid character can be anything, the program is looking for ascii characters but finds all kind of other binary stuff in the job file,
chr.
ASCII converter...
...Cool thanks! Now I just have to figure out why Christ's ASCII converter worked fine & mine is not.
He was able to convert it just fine & I got my line work ! Yippee !

Trimble Link
Did some research and installed the ascii utility on a fresh Win7 pc, and got the same error, no conversion to jobxml possible.
After installing Trimble Data Transfer this problem is solved, it runs now with the job file as input and fbk as output.
Conclusion.
ascii file utility runs independent from other Trimble software when your input file is a .jxl made on the dc and then downloaded to the pc. (one exception when using a geoid model for gps, then you need this same geoid file installed on the pc for exporting E,N,El. values - Geoid must be located in C:Program FilesCommon FilesTrimbleGeoData)
If you want to use .job files as input in the ascii utility you also need to have Trimble Data transfer installed on the pc. (This program installs all necessary conversions from job to whatever format - also jxl.)
Found now the same info in 'Creating custom ascii files and reports for Trimble Survey Controller software' pdf from july 2005.

Hi Christ,
I know it's been a while since this thread has seen some action but I've recently run into the same problem. The ASCII generator won't accept a *.job file as the source file, however, it will accept a *.jxl file. I've installed the ASCII File Generator as well as the Data Transfer utility and put the geoid model I'm using in the appropriate directory (C:Program FilesCommon FilesTrimbleGeoData). Prior to installing the Data Transfer utility, I encountered the same error previously discussed:

After installing the Data Transfer I get the same error, along with a new one:

It says it can't locate the required file converter and I wonder if it means the style sheet (which has not been moved from it's appropriate location) or if it means something else all together.
I was wondering if anyone else has run into this same problem and if in the time since the last post on this thread, other solutions were discovered.
Any help would be greatly appreciated.
Thanks,
RH.

Hi,
strange, it makes me think that your Data Transfer is not up to date with your job files version.
Can you import these same jobs into TGO or TBC without problems? (don't know if you have one of these installed)
The updates of Trimble Data Transfer are also managed by the Trimble Access Installation Manager I think, when you update your Trimble Access software on the dc you also have to run the update for the office software ... that will update your conversion programs that Data Transfer is using.
(you have to do that on each pc where you will download data.)
If no office software installed then I would try installing the latest Data Transfer version.

If you are trying to use the Trimble ASCII generator, there are a couple of other things you must do besides run the converter:
1 Download Trimble Access Installation Manger:
http://www.trimble.com/Survey/Trimble-Access-IS.aspx
2 Click TAIM, download, follow prompts. Then Update Windows office and your handset if neccessary.
3. Make sure that the geoid file (.ggf) you used to conduct the survey is present in the correct folder on your PC.
On our TSC3 it lived here:
My Device > Trimble Data > System Files >
Put it here on your computer:
C:Program Files (x86)Common FilesTrimbleGeoData
This worked for me, hopefully it helps others.
I am looking for help on this issue as well. Below is a run down of the programs I've installed, in the order I installed them.
1. ASCII File Generator (along with the FBK file custom style sheet)
2. Trimble Update Office Software
3. Trimble Link
4. Trimble Link Engine Install
5. Data Transfer Utility
After all of that, I still get an error message asking about a missing grid file (see image attached). I've followed up on this, and it refers me to download a .ggf file and place it on my local computer in the Geodata folder. Only problem is, I don't have a Geodata folder. Can someone help? Anything else I should be downloading?
Hi Devon,
Your Geodata folder seems to be the problem.
That might be
C:Program Files (x86)Common FilesTrimbleGeoData
or
C:Program FilesCommon FilesTrimbleGeoData
depending on your Windows and/or Trimble software installed.
A last possibility is to install the Trimble Co̦rdinate System Update
TrimbleCoordSystemUpdateSept2005 for TGO1.63
(see Trrimble.com) but i'm niot sure that will even run without TGO or TBC installed.
I'll add some other info as well from years ago.
Let us know if this helps,
Chr.
I had a problem with TIM (formerly TAIM) properly updating a machine to be able to convert the latest JOB files yesterday, so I downloaded the Update Office Software utility:
http://www.trimble.com/Survey/Trimble-Access-IS.aspx
That worked like a champ.
Edit - the above link only takes you to the Support page; click on Downloads, the update utility is the second item on the list.
