It's been awhile since this has emerged as an option...
I was just curious how many were using it with an S6?
Also curious what bluetooth pole mounted reciever you
had choosen, and how it's worked out for you?
YUP, I'm thinking of going this direction too!
Thanks!
Have a great weekend!
I'd like to know the same thing and if Trimble Access has finally caught up to TDS for construction staking? Also how is the communication between TDS and the S6?
Are you talking about the GPS "bug" to help the robot find the prism?
I had one for a TSC2...can't remember the brand, I think we mounted it to the top of the MT1000 prism with some sort of home-made bracket.
The TSC3 has internal GPS and works much better. FYI, I love the GPS search aid...though it's not perfect. I think it works better if you turn elevations off...that way it just uses the GPS's horizontal location.
Hi,
this feature is called GPS-search when used in Trimble Access.
We have a HOLUX GPSlim 236 that we mount on top of our 360° active prism for the S6.
The black plastic piece and the rubber are from Trimble.
Works indeed best for us when configured to use the horizontal location only.
Since most of our work is topo along roads we rarely use them, but its a great tool when you're out in the open and have a lot of obstructions.
enjoy your weekend!

I've got it. Used it everyday for the first week I got the gun. Now I don't even use it because of keeping the gps charged. I don't like having to change the search window when gps is locked and when not locked. Like others say, would work better with TSC3. I got the TSC2 and it's not that great of a feature for me. Don't buy one from Trimble. It cost me $400 as an option. GPS gizmo is cheap on amazon and you could just rubber band the dang thing on.
We're running TDS survey pro, with the S6 I mentioned.
It's got the 2.4mhz widespectrum radio... I've used it with
little problems out to about 1600ft. without any apparent problems.
We're in a mix of what you might find in any small town of about 50k...
It seems like a good option with working around some street traffic and
construction equipment. If it reduces the search time by half, I figure it
will be worth the time and battery savings.... we do lot's of topo and
construction staking, otherwise I might not bother.
Very interesting!
I've never seen that housing to mount a Holux like that
in any Trimble catalog I've seen!
Do you still have the part numbers for it? Anything to
protect the little unit would be handy in the Oregon rain!
Thanks for the post, and great pictures! As usual!
Phillip, thanks for the great advice... I was going aftermarket
anyway, just in case we didn't get along with it too well....
Now the workgroup supervisor would love that rubber band idea!!
We had a couple of the Holux CF cards that go in the TSC2. They sort of worked. We don't use them anymore. TRhe conclusion seems to be that they were more trouble than they were worth.

:good: That gps is what I use with a trimble 5600 and older tds on the tsc2. I have the car charger set up in the truck, and also use the gps to my laptop when navigating to points with electronic copies of quad sheets.
Sorry,
no part numbers ...

We get stuck on either side of the road many times, moving from shot to shot with
trucks, SUVs, and such blocking the optical tracking.... thought it might help with that... I see it as a more specific site usage, not a cure all. Besides I just found a complete setup like the one pictured above in a rental inventory that is up for sale at a very reasonable price.
End result, for $150 or so, I think I can save that much time easily on a few jobs, it will be worth it and maybe not only pay for itself, but make a little money in saved search time on some jobs.
Like so much of the time, it's choosing the right equipment and technique for the
scope of the job!!
Thanks to all for the GREAT information!!!!
What would be great is if Trimble would use geolock automatically instead of having to actually hit the button to start a search. Like tracking the glass with gps as backup so instantly when it loses lock the geolock kicks in, or even when it loses lock the geolock controls the gun until the glass is in clear sight. Like walking around a building and when coming around the corner the gun is waiting on the prism.
I hear what your saying Phillip!
That would be great....!
I know that they can set the time delay for the gun to start
searching when prism lock is lost.
It would seem a slick little bit of programming to make an
option for that to switch to GeoLock mode when prism is lost
and then continue to track optically when there is a "return"
signal from the glass....and switch back to optical locking...
Although, with my luck it would "see" a street sign and lock on
to it, while I was still walking down the other side of the street.
Hmmm I think you've hit on a great support question for the
programers over at Spectra Precision/TDS!!
I'll try emailing that one to their support team!
Heck, they're just south of town, on the other side of Mary's
river, across from the county surveyors office... I've even had
the employees stop and chat while driving by while I was shooting
topo for the engineers here!
WELL, looks like you would be the better choice to talk with them. If I talked with them it would be out of anger. I truthfully don't don't care if survey pro went out of business. Once a great program but not at all today.
