I was just about decided to try and pick up an older Trimble R8 Model 2 with a TSC2 collector with Survey Controller V12.44 and I read that there may be wifi issues with the TSC2 controller. Can anyone tell me if it's possible to use the TSC2 controller with an iphone 12 for hotspot for using the Mississippi Statewide network as a network rover? The other option is more money for a base/rover setup and a TSC3, but a working network rover would suit my needs and I could pick up a used reflectorless TS, which would be nice.

If the TSC2 is local to you go test it. My favorite combination was the TSC2 with a flip phone e815 but you had to crack the Bluetooth dun issue. That was many years ago now. But that e815 would pick up a cell signal when many i mean many others would not. TDOT had a test years ago and every dealer had to get on a point and the e815 was one of the only ones that could get a signal that day. I am no IT person but from what I understand is not all wifi is standard so tsc2 using windows mobile might have issues with newer wifi frequency. ?ÿ

I have much better luck with my base rover setup than my network rover when it comes to canopy and obstructions. I assume itƒ??s the significantly longer vectors with the virtual network. Was my money Iƒ??d want to try it all out before committing to anything. Also verify the receiverƒ??s firmware is up to date or you could end up dealing with a bunch of other headaches.

I was wondering about the canopy issue when comparing between the rover setup vs a base rover setup as well. Some guys that I know that run a base/rover setup didnƒ??t seem to think it would be a big difference, but had not really tested it and compared both ways either

If you wanting to get into canopy and other multi-path areas then you had better go with a newer unit that tracks all signals and has better engines in it. Like R12 by Trimble, Javad, BRX by Carlson. The R8 ?ÿwas a great unit but you had better check it when even close to trees signs etc. ?ÿany multi path area. As I can guarantee I ran them through the ringer and you can get a false or bad initialization in those instances. ?ÿEven the newer equipment can but it is not as frequent and can be detected with greater confidence now. Still not perfect but enough where you can easily build in some procedures to help mitigate it further.?ÿ

I ended up buying an R6 with a tsc2 and also a Topcon reflectorless TS (3005w). It will be for boundary surveying and Iƒ??m hoping the R6 will help minimize traversing and help locate roads, set control points, and any points in open areas. Right now, Iƒ??m just hoping I can get the tsc2 to connect to a hot spot and I donƒ??t have to sell it and get a tsc3

I've heard of people who have problems using even the newer data collectors with an iPhone for a hotspot.

I know there were problems with the Tsc2 using mifi in the beginning. These were overcome by changing the security features of the mifi.?ÿ The Tsc2 doesn't support some of the, at that time newer security protocols. Wpa2 was definitely not supported, I can't remember if the , even older, WPA was supported or not.?ÿ I believe we had to turn off even WPA.

Wifi Security wasn't really a big issue considering it's use.?ÿ

@btaylor what software did you get on the TSC2 Survey Controller or Survey Pro. Etc. ?ÿi might still have some old manuals and quick start guides on how to set it up and troubleshooting I can send you. I will have to do some digging in storage but I made up several different ones when I was in that role of supporting different companies on a network vrs. Along with quick how-toƒ??s for different cogo routines. Some might still be on some cd somewhere also. I even made some videos that were screen shots that were small and short that my customers field crews could play on windows mobile. So they kept them on the data collector if they lost settings and such.

@btaylor?ÿ - I can speak from experience with a Trimble R6 Model 4 that is a VRS network only receiver right now that tracks GPS/GLONASS/GALILEO - it's a good unit but it may struggle to fit the role you need it for if any moderately sized trees or buildings are nearby. Same with being in a low-lying area.

?ÿ

I've had times where said unit could pick up 15 satellites with moderate nearby trees or buildings and your repeated observations over the 4+ hour recommended spread gave good results. I've had other times where the same receiver struggled to get 7 satellites at the EXACT same setup. I think most of this was from a mission planning standpoint when satellites may not have been available or they were blocked by the previously mentioned trees and buildings. Now open, flat farm fields that were pre-construction site topos - that was a good little receiver for jobs like that and provided comparable results to newer GNSS base/rover setups without the additional equipment

?ÿ

That being said, I've used the R12i on NC's VRS network several times and that receiver as well as Carlson's BRX7 and both units can chew through the canopy typically no problem (better than Topcon's Hiper VR too). May take them both a little while for the RMS to settle out but if you can see blue sky they will both usually get a decent fix and some times right at the base of a large tree or power pole. Even if not, they'll allow you to burn in a quick nail or two nearby to setup on with the TS and shoot in whatever you need to - seen where several other local surveyors are starting to do that more and more.?ÿ

@ncsudirtman so in NC are you allowed to do a boundary survey with rtk only. ?ÿAre you also allowed to say on a rural boundary tie one end down with rtk because its open and on other end set control with rtk and traverse a smaller area and such perform least squares and meet the standards.

It is supposed to have Carlson SurvCE and Survey Controller 12.5. My concern right now is WiFi connection with the tsc2. I purchased an R6 head with a tsc2 controller. I have to have hotspot to connect the tsc2 to the Mississippi RTN. The only hotspots I have is through my iPhone and iPad. One is Verizon and one is ATT.

@btaylor gotcha. Well once your equipment arrives just test it. When all this first started with vrs networks and such I we t to the local Verizon and AT&T stores and let them know that if they were good to my customers I would send them more. So they would at a verizon store give me a call when any new phone and the first mifi deviceƒ??s came i ?ÿso I could use it for a week testing all over Georgia ?ÿthat one Verizon store was top notch ?ÿI could send a customer to them and they would call me and i would tell them exactly what my customer needed and it was awesome ?ÿif your IPhone doesnƒ??t work maybe go and find a local store and ask if you can test different devices ?ÿwhat part of Mississippi are you in ?ÿ I was raised in Mississippi went to school and some college their ?ÿ
