In its standard state, say when doing RTK connected to a bluetooth data collector, is the R8 sending data to the RS232 9-pin port that can be read from the R8 without further commands or instructions sent to R8?

I have no idea. Just a friendly bump.

Thanks Brad. Looks like nobody does it with R8.

Port 2 (the DE9M receptacle) on the Trimble R8 can do quite a few things while the receiver is being used as a RTK rover, including communicating with a data collector, receiving the observation information from a reference receiver, or outputing positions and related information. AFAIK there is no "default" output on that port.

The Trimble R8 can output more than 20 different NMEA-0183 data strings (and a whole bunch of other things) from Port 2.

What prezactly are you trying to do?

Mebbe something like sending positions to a depth sounder with logging capabilities?

If you can describe what you are trying to accomplish I will be glad to provide whatever assistance I can.

Glen, Thanks!

I am just wanting to read an NMEA0183 serial data string from the serial port to a PC. I use the R8GNSS for RTK work mostly, and it uses Bluetooth. What I really want to do is output from the serial port in ASCII NMEA 0183 without having to go into some kind of advanced configuration. Was hoping it already does it.

Configuring Trimble R8 to output serial data

A document with instructions on configuring the Trimble R8 to output serial data is hyperlinked from this page, the second document from the top.

This configuration does not interfere with the normal RTK operation of the Trimble R8 and is pretty simple to perform.

If the computer that will receive the serial data is running a Windows operating system, I suppose you could run GPS Configurator and simply activate the serial-data output whenever you actually needed it, then let it go away when the receiver is powered off.

Or, let the customized POWER_UP.CFG file start the serial-data output each time the receiver is powered up as described in the instructions; it does not seem to impose a noticeable burden on the receiver.

If/when you want to get rid of the customized POWER_UP.CFG file, just do a full reset of the receiver.
