I have a Trimble IIe radio which is not FCC complaint and contains a Motorola GM300. I was wonder if the radio can be swapped out with a FCC complaint GM300? My true question is whether the trimble circuit board within unit will work with in the narrowband?
Before you swap out the hardware, see if you can change the settings to be narrow band compliant.
Try to change the Modulation and Link Rate as per table below.
Lee, i looked into that first but it wont work. The UHF frequency setting are out of i need also and cant be adjusted.
Good luck. I'm not good at tinkering with electronics like that. Software is my thing.
If I open the case like you did, it just never seems to work after that.
I can't help with the electronics question, but I can say that sawing through the GM300 heat sink to free it from the epoxy fixing it to the Trimble back panel takes some time. That's one of the more unusual arrangements I've ever seen.

I am about to give it a try. the whole thing might be in the bottom of the bayou tonight.

That's probably where it's going, but electronic waste recycling would be a better option.
Or ebay it, to a foreign country...

For what i paid for it was worth taking apart. I am going to purchase a motorola M1225 radio (narrowband) on ebay and see if it works. If it does ill have a radio/repeater for under $100. If not lesson learned. I'll report back. A good sawsall blade will make quick work of the radio heat fins.
Might have something. Found narrowband m1225 on eBay for $45. Going test it tomorrow. The transmit light did come on when I started the base.

Having sawn off the M300, what's the form factor going to be now that you have it all hooked together? Does the M1225 not have a big heat sink hung off the back?

the m1225 is a lot smaller in depth 4.25 compared to 7.75 of the gm300. No big heat sink

Did you ever get this to work?

No i didn't , i think it's the baud rate i need to figure.?ÿ
Unfortunately,?ÿ you probably have to program the radio to shake hands with the Trimble board and there may be an incompatibility issue given the substitution of your newer radio.?ÿ
