Poor analogy. Better analogy is that you buy a car that is 6 years old and it breaks down and the parts to repair and get the car running are no longer being produced, so you are forced to buy a different car. In the real world this wouldn't happen, cause Trimble Automobile would have it's pants sued.

If you were the original purchaser and had been paying for regular annual maintenance, the manufacturer provides a new model at no cost if the old one stops working.
There is an opportunity cost of not doing annual maintenance. With cars, houses, software, hardware, spouses, etc.
