Topcon total station - PTL routine

Hello,

I am trying to understand point to line routine on Topcon GPT 3005 and would like a few pointers. If anyone can help, that would be appreciated.

Going through the manual, my understanding is the PTL routine could possibly be used for line stakeout. The program requires to create a point on that from-to line by entering the L (length) , O (Offset) and E (elevation). It seems overkill to have to create a point in order to just stake out a line.

The task at hand is to layout the azimuth of a drill. Example: Point 1 is the collar, point 2 is the target. That is the reference line. Do I create a "bogus" point 3 using the ptl routine in order to be able to get delta offset readings (line 1-2) when taking shots to position the drill steel on line (station and elevation components do not matter, just want to get on line) ?

Am I missing something? Hope I am making some kind of sense and thanks for help.

Found it I think. Instead of stakeout mode, going in data collection mode should do the trick.

Point to line measurement (7-18, instruction manual)
In this mode, a offsetting point from a certain determined line can be measured.

I have a Topcon CTS3007, which is a very, very similar instrument.

When I bought it, I thought I might take the time to learn the onboard software, but I never got around to it. With two TDS Rangers, I just did not have the time to learn something tiotally different and still be productive.

We are getting a couple of summer students, so I am looking at the simpliest safe job procedure and resources requirements to help the guys successfully carrying those very defined tasks: conventional backsight station setup, resection setup, point stakeout, line stakeout.

Pencil, field book, total station, tripod, pole, prism. The onboard PTL should do the trick I think. DC's are easy to use also, that will be a fall back option.

In the end Jim I am going the DC route. It will be a lot easier for the guys to stake a line with SurvCE. Just have to remind them not to drop the cable in the mud and/or force the cable into total station port.

Very limited, the on-board program on the GPT3005. Basic topo, point stakeout + a couple of tidbits. Line stakeout is pretty basic, however, the program does not appear to be design for such task.
