Is anyone using the Topcon Imaging Station? Please tell me about your experiences with it and what it does for you that a non-imaging robot doesn't.
THANKS
It is amazing how many people think we use the telescope, to scope out girls.
(I guess that is what they would be doing!)
I thought the imaging TS would be a fine tool of choice, for that, but so far, no images have shown up, on this or the old forum.

TRIMBLE VX SPATIAL STATION: CAPTURE THE SHAPE OF THE REAL WORLD
Capture and combine scanning, imaging and surveying deliverables with the singular solution designed for surveyors. Integrating the technologies of advanced optical surveying, metric imaging and 3D scanning, the Trimble® VX™ Spatial Station is the only surveying instrument that does it all and does it with ease.
To improve the efficiency of capturing advanced Spatial Imaging deliverables, Trimble provides an integrated solution for bringing these technologies together within the traditional workflows surveyors already use. So you have the flexibility to perform feature-rich scans every day, without the complexity of setting up a separate scanning system or switching to specialized field software.
Video-Assisted Control
Trimble VISION™ gives you the power to see everything the instrument sees. Direct your work with live video images on the controller Now you are free to capture measurements to prism or reflectorless surface with a point and click.
Empower Your Surveys with Trimble RealWorks
With the ability to capture metric images with the Trimble VX in the field, you are also able to make additional measurements and attribute the data back in the office. Advanced 3D models and image-rendered 3D surfaces are within your reach with the rich data delivered by Trimble Spatial Imaging sensors and the powerful workflows of Trimble RealWorks™ software.

Don't be fooled by the 20hz measurements. The unit may measure 20 points a second but the measurements are being taken even as the unit turns. Think about a 10' by 10' area that you want to scan at 1' intervals. That's 100 points. At 20hz, you would complete it in 5 seconds. The instrument can not position to 100 individual points in 5 seconds. It also can not do a true grid. The separation changes the further you turn vertically as it uses the distance to determine the angle separation an applies that for the entire scan. Units like the Leica TS15, which is what I have, determines the plane you are measuring and adjusts to maintain the grid separation I wanted.
My opinion, don't get caught up in the hype. Get it out in the real world and compare them in a realistic situation.

Does the Leica TS15 do scans like the Topcon IS?

Are you saying that you have never done that? I know I have!! 😀

I love my VX. It's scanner is pretty quick, for a 1" robot. 🙂

No. And that's a good thing. The Topcon can't do a scan to a true Grid. If you scan a tall object, you may start with a 0.5m separation between the grids but by the time you get to the top, the same vertical angle separation is applied so the grids are significantly greater that what you started with. You can't define the grid separations either on the Topcon, well not on the unit we tested, you could only specify the number of points measured. Leica lets you do volume calcs onboard from the scan and none of the other instruments can do that onboard. Trimble say "up to 15 points/sec, typical 5 points/sec". Based on what? How far apart at the shots? How far away is the object? Do yourself a favor, don't base your descion on spec sheets. Get a demo of each, scan a surface/building just like you would in the real world, define your grid separation, time the scan and look carefully at the results. Then do it on a horizontal surface. You will want to keep the Leica. Still, none of them compare to a real scanner...

Kris, does your VX work as advertised; can scan say an intersection while you do RTK work? Are you satisfied with the robotic search and lock features, reflectorless features?
