I do not find very many stones on the rights-of-way of roads very often. I bet I can count the number I've found on one hand. I got lucky today and it is a real beauty.

Congratulations. Setting reference stones for PLSS corners on the road right-of-way was fairly common around here in the 1930's and 1940's. Have found a few dozen of those in the past 30 years. Smart surveyors intentionally set them on the r-o-w line but not on the quarter section line because that spot was typically reserved for a BIG fence corner post.

Why you didn't spray the crap out of that thing with fluorescent red paint is a mystery to me. lol

That is an impressive piece of work. What are the marks cut into the stone surface?

There was no real evident x cuts or the such on the stone. The marks on the top were just weathered.
