> Now 22 year's as a county surveyor...
Well, if you have to be old, and you have to be a surveyor, I'd say county surveyor would be a cushy enough job... NOW,...get out of here. I'm just kidding. I'm a kidder. There's a LOT of kidders around here. I think we kinda like it that way.;-) Glad you're here. Stroll around the grounds until you feel at home. I've become a bit of an old codger myself. All the important boring details are in my profile. I Love it, even if it is killing me. But, you know what Will Rogers said about aging:...
First ~ Eventually you will reach a point when you stop lying about your age and start bragging about it.
Second ~ The older we get, the fewer things seem worth waiting in line for.
Third ~ Some people try to turn back their odometers. Not me, I want people to know "why" I look this way. I've traveled a long way and some of the roads weren't paved.
Fourth ~ When you are dissatisfied and would like to go back to youth, think of Algebra.
Fifth ~ You know you are getting old when everything either dries up or leaks.
Sixth ~ I don't know how I got over the hill without getting to the top.
Seventh ~ One of the many things no one tells you about aging is that it is such a nice change from being young.
Eighth ~ One must wait until evening to see how splendid the day has been.
Ninth ~ Long ago when men cursed and beat the ground with sticks, it was called witchcraft. Today it's called golf.
And finally Tenth ~ If you don't learn to laugh at trouble, you won't have anything to laugh at when you are old.
Take care,
ED
Thanks for your service Jerel and i hope you get another 30+ as a Surveyor.

That was a great reply Ed.
I have been there in Nam/ Louisiana/Mississippi/Texas/ ALABAMA/Georgia.
After Nam twice & the swamp's. It has been a little easier. I do miss the swamp's
you will lose your fear of water in that country. I am a Hydro graphic Surveyor by heart. Aint no slacker, My crew dis-like's me, I am 60 and can still wear their arse out!!
Old Surveyor's Never Die!

Hell, I still need help..
With all the Gadget's I have,GRS-1/ RANGER 500X.
No one will believe this but i still use a 41CX with supr-rom for my vertical & horizontal Designs. It is 2 time's faster than C&G/Carlson owned, which I use...
Jerel McLarty
Hey you sound kinda like TEDD! Except TEDD HATES WATER
Auqua TEDD
Thanks for your service.
You and me both Brother...
I use my 41CX to QA/QC AutoCAD C3D...lol...just like old men chaining to 'check' them new fangled EDM light beams.
Sometimes an 'old' tool is the right tool...and without 'old' surveyors to teach us how to use them...well...we are just trusting technology.

Sometimes low tech is the best tech for the job.
I have been in the business since 1972. Did all my calcs by hand and then came the hand helds with the sub-routines that allowed the kids to push the buttons and get the right answer ten times faster than I could. That scenario has been the rule ever since.
I was out riding today and met another "old surveyor" and we had the same conversation. What we figured we still had left to impart to the kids was the sense of using your nose, eyes, and intuition when doing old retracements. The numbers don't always tell the story.
I like old Docs better too.
No computers, fancy machines,
just a stethoscope and listening.
A young Doc kind of irritated me when she prescribed based on a computer print-out. Shoot no need for the Doc anymore, just let the compooper do it!
There is no substitute for...
the Land Surveyor walking the line himself/herself.
And talk to the people you encounter. I always take time to talk to the property owners out there.
" The numbers don't always tell the story.
Amen Merlin. We aught to print that on the inside front cover of our field books.
