I spent yesterday doing a solo topo of a landfill unit in preparation for closure. It was a gorgeous day, sunny, mid-60s, no wind -- darn near perfect conditions, and I was enjoying every minute of it. At one point my client pulled up to chat about some things, so I took the opportunity to check the backsight. We talked for maybe 10 minutes, whereupon he left and I continued taking shots. 60 shots later I realized that I hadn't relocked onto my prism. I had been loosely watching the lock indicator, but not the angle or distance.
Reshooting an area you thought you just shot is something I find particularly frustrating. Just slightly less frustrating than having no one to blame but myself.
you know . . .
some surveyors claim talking to clients while working has no effect on their work . . .
I say, I'll talk to the client before and after, but when I work, my field book is in my hand(or data collector) and my vocabulary is numbers and such.
Small talk is reserved for when I'm eating lunch, sitting on the tailgate, sitting in the office or getting a "cold one".
I say they don't mix

Your exactly right, but the relationship matters too.
I'm pretty much ADD and really try to take a deep breath after these moments to get back on track. If they want to hang around the whole time I can usually figure out a way to run them off-nicely.
Really sucks to think the hays in the barn just to realize you have to take it all out and re-stack it.

Agreed.
I still remember the day I was talking with a co-worker, he was setting up the gun when his phone rang.
I was shocked to see him totally ignore his phone, he didn't even glance to see who it was.
He explained that he would not break his concentration when already engaged in a task.
That was so simple, yet so brilliant.
Focus.
One of my major pet peeves ....
is when some store clerk thinks that a ringing phone is more important than the person standing in front of them ready to do business. I generally just leave merchandise on the counter and walk away. Most don't understand.

Ditto. It seems like I have especially seen it in car-parts stores (when you've been waiting in line to get their help). I thought it would be funny sometime to call them up while I'm standing line, and asking them for the part I need right there on the phone.

adam, I've done the same thing at the bar ... "hey, how about a drink down here!"

My buddy did that at Wal-Mart. We were back in the sporting goods section waiting for someone to wander by to get him some ammo out. He gets out his cell calls up and says "Yeah, I'm back here in the sporting goods, I need some ammo would someone come get it." after about 10min. of waiting again, he called back and said "Yeah, it's me again. I'm still waiting for that ammo." They then pulled some poor woman from her lunch break to come get it out. I felt bad after that but she was more P.O.ed at the store than us. 😀

I do the same thing. I have even explained to supervisors why I am walking out. Even they do not seem to understand. I am attached to my phone just as much as the next person. However not when there is something more pressing at hand.
