1902 - - I think one of the surveyors might have been Deral Paulk's great grandfather. Probably wearing Okie State orange.

What, almost getting killed or having to escape to Oklahoma. Likely the later, eh 😛
Surveyors Chased out of Natchez, Mississippi
I recall reading a report to the Office of the Chief of Engineers, U.S.Army that a Triangulation Party was chased out of Natchez by some local Indians shooting arrows at the observers (while they were in towers made of scantling). This was in the early to middle 1870s.
No such troubles, the following observing season, but no explanation was given.
What puzzles me...
is the "Snake Indians". I thought the Snake Indians were from the Pacific NW. Guess they got around.
What puzzles me...
I never heard of any Snake Indians in the NW. I lived there over 40 years.

Per Wiki:
Snake Indians is the common name given by American immigrants on the Oregon Trail to the bands of Northern Paiute, Bannock and Shoshone Native Americans in the Snake River and Owyhee River valleys of southern Idaho and Eastern Oregon.
The term "Snake Indian" later included the Northern Paiute tribes found in the basins between the Cascade Mountains and these valleys in Oregon and northern Nevada and northeastern California. These people were the opponents of the California and Oregon Volunteers and U. S. Army, in the Snake War.
