Hello everybody,
The Windows CE/Mobile operating system has been the standard solution for surveying rugged devices since quite a while. Whit the up come of Trimble Juno T14, Android had also gained some ground. It seems that Trimble started to promote it more. Leica Geosystems seems to be entirely committed to Windows CE which looks more like old Windows 95.
Do you know professional software offerings for Android? How do you see the future
of Android in Surveying field?
I look forward to reeving your opinions.
Hi Jan,
I don't know any other brand then the one you mentioned. Trimble seems to be the first ... but the Juno is more for GIS purposes and not realy surveying.
When it comes to the small surveying market I don't see the big companies invest in writing the same survey software for another operating system. Maybe you will control your TS or GPS with you smarthphone but will that be a confortable solution in the field? I prefer my dc with full alfanum. keyboard in the field.
Speaking about GIS, here I see possible advantages for use of smarthphones and tablets or other devices running Android. Combining on site pictures with a fill-in form has a lot of potential for a lot of field operators.
I've recently had a look at GISCloud.
Christof.
We are getting a demo of Trimble TerraFlex tomorrow moring from our local dealer. It's a pretty basic GIS software, but it runs on Windows Mobile, Android, and iOS. We are looking at getting a few people up and running with it on their phones. Our level of accuracy does not need to be that great.
The Trimble TerraFlex looks interesting.
I mean if you saw a benefit of having Android on a filed controller which interacts with a TS or GS. The user experience is deferentially better than on Windows, more intuitive easier to handle, also a really comprehensive applications offering which already run on standard smartphones.
I wonder if there is a Windows to Android translation app. Then it would have both platforms. I guess would just be a Lenix type of translator. Just a thought.
Aloha, Jan: Saw this today. It is for iOS. I hope it won't be too long before surveyor can do actual work with their mobile devices instead of expensive data collectors.

UGL now has Copan for Android. There's a limited capacity free version.
(I no longer work there and it was developed after I left.)
Interesting link... But why oh why do people think we want to listen to the half baked techno music while they zoom around their screen captures?? I'd love to hear a person narrating what exactly they are doing with that product, instead of their neighbors garage band recording. 😉
Trimble are currently advertising here for Android programmers.
They also recently bought an NZ firm who's main product is on Android
I'd expect to see Android equipment in their line-up in the very near future
This sounds promising. Trimble will probably revamp the surveying software in the next years. Leica is always two steps behind when it comes to software technologies, but they are masters on offering very integrated systems.
