Does anyone out there know what's the difference between Trimble equipment and Spectra Precision? Is Spectra Precision just a cheaper version of Trimble?

I thought it was intended towards the machine-controlled construction industry, but essentially the same hardware with significantly different software.

Spectra purchased Geodimeter in about 1999. The accessories with my 600 Geodimeter is sort of a brand hybrid, part of each. Once Trimble acquired Spectra, the Spectra instruments seemed to be old Trimble models with a new paint job. I have heard that lately, some of the Spectra instruments have slight variations, more than color, from Trimble. I have not kept up on the software changes.

Spectra Precision is basically the company we used to know as TDS. TDS was bought by Trimble several years ago but the individuals in Corvallis get rather testy when you remind them of that. Trimble, I think, leaves them alone for the most part.

Spectra tends to market their TDS flavored software with the equipment it sells, while Trimble markets software developed in New Zealand with theirs.

Actually Spectra Precision purchased Geodometer, then Trimble purchased Spectra Precision. Trimble purchased Tripod Data Systems later and put it under their Spectra Precision branch.

Made? Well I can tell you not in America, just like everything else, if that's what you are asking.

Then Trimble retired the Spectra Precision brand for awhile. Now it has resurrected it by rebranding TDS as Spectra Precision while adding a line of hardware.
