On vacation in greater Chicago area. Saw a surveyor in action on the way into downtown Kenosha, WI. He had a tripod and reflector on ever control point for a mile. I think maybe six total including the gun. I don't own that many tripods or reflectors. I think he had a robot but didn't get a long look at the gun. Got to see a New York Central concrete right-of-way marker in a private collection in South Elgin. Now with post box attached. It was along the right-of-way of the old Elgin, Aurora and Southern - a little out of place.

That's pretty unusual. Just got back from Milwaukee myself, Andy. Hope you enjoyed the cooler weather, I sure did. Got back two days ago and it's been 95å¡ here in Okie-Homey...
I try to forget I'm a surveyor when I get away...it never works. 😉
I actually stepped away from a group tour I was on to go see what was next to a lathe I noticed on the side of a grade in the woods. It was a 3/8" rebar.

Ha, it's a sickness, but I do the same thing.
You have to control it when you're on vacationB-)
The local post office would not deliver to such a box attached to a monument or public structure and demand it to be replaced in another location.
They have no problem with a mail ordered plastic bass with hook in its mouth box. A neighbor fashioned a well built wooden JohnDeer tractor box that they refused to deliver to.
When I drive down the highway or walk around, I am constantly looking for evidence of boundary and monumentation and other remnant of original locations.

I don't think that the box is for USPS items. It is on private property adjoining adjoining a railroad ROW and is not accessible by regular means. I do not know what the purpose of the box is but I believe it fills some function for the station related to the operation of the line.
