From a recent news article:
?ÿ
"Researchers from the University of Nevada, Las Vegas speculated that the expensive car owners "felt a sense of superiority over other road users" and were less able to empathize with lowly sidewalk-dwellers. They came to this conclusion after asking volunteers to cross a sidewalk hundreds of times, filming and analyzing the responses by car drivers."
?ÿ
This study has shown a direct correlation between the monetary value of a vehicle and the driver's "disengagement and a lower ability to interpret thoughts and feelings of others. Along with a display of feelings of entitlement and narcissism leading to a lack of empathy for pedestrians".?ÿ That's a lot of five dollar words saying the guy in the Maserati or Bentley is more prone to plow you over than someone driving a 10 year old Toyota.
?ÿ
I don't think this is really a new concept.?ÿ I'm pretty sure surveyors working in or near the road have been keen to this for years.?ÿ I have.
?ÿ
I'm reminded of an incident that happened when I was working road construction.?ÿ We had "closed" a road with signage in preparation of completely removing a concrete box culvert that crossed the road.?ÿ Of course prior to the actual removal there were plenty of people that went around the barricades to find that the box was still in place and merrily scooted along their way.?ÿ Then came the day everybody went to work in the AM...and we removed the box during the day.?ÿ This left a 20' wide and 10' deep trench all the way across the roadbed.?ÿ Of course we had increase the barricades and signs.
?ÿ
One zealous idiot actually stopped, got out, and moved several barricades before proceeding to drive his fancy car off into the abyss.?ÿ We got him out and called for an ambulance.?ÿ He was banged up but lived.?ÿ His car was a goner.?ÿ We had him laying there trying to keep him calm until help arrived.?ÿ One of the equipment operators made an obvious observation.."I guess you don't need brains if you've got money".
?ÿ
We all laughed...well, except for the driver.?ÿ I don't think he thought it was very funny.

They came to this conclusion after asking volunteers to cross a sidewalk hundreds of times

"cross a sidewalk"? I posted just yesterday about poor writing in the news, and here comes another. I assume that they mean crossing the road in a crosswalk. Crossing a sidewalk would be a very brief trip, from which not many conclusions could be drawn.?ÿ I'm not sure who is responsible for that language, the brainiacs at UNLV or the "journalists" at CNN.

Hey, I've got to express myself. Suppressing these thoughts is stressful in its own way. And thanks for the picture. That is something I will never be able to un-see.

He doesn't need to post it into anymore threads, in my opinion.

That's about right.

Money - and anything associated with lots of it - equals power, at least in this society. When individuals are primed for power (i.e. driving a very expensive vehicle) they are statistically much less likely to see the perspective of others, empathize with their situation and show consideration for their safety.

As a side note, I commute by bicycle, car, motorcycle, and on foot at various times. 95% of the harassment and dangerous activity I see, while outside of the car, is from folks in high-end vehicles. 95% of the verbal abuse is from middle-aged to older folks, despite everything I hear about "disrespectful kids these days"...

As a former Christmas-season Salvation Army bell-ringer I can state unequivocally that folks driving expensive vehicles are far less generous than normal folks.

this is far to true.?ÿ even subconsciously if i see a BMW of Mercedes i will move off the edge of the road into the ditch because 99% of the time they're going to pass me fast enough to beat Marty Mcfly in a drag race.?ÿ

When I see a man in an expensive car I see a man with a huge car payment.

Mr. K,

I appreciate your sentiment but not every man driving and expensive car has a car payment.

Elon Musk had a Euro exotic car that he used as a daily driver with no monthly payment. In fact he didn't even have insurance on the vehicle. Crashed it and totaled it, I believe.

Just sayin'.
