I hear that there is a smi routine that means backsight foresight eleavtions. Does tds have a routine to do this?

not sure what you are trying to do here, can you explain it a little better. I know tds extremely well so I think I can help if I understand what you are asking.

may be average of Face Left and Face Right Vertical Angles to FS and to BS before computing dEl? (getting rid of vertical index)

Yes, Several Nice SMI Elevation Features

If the backsight has a elevation you can shoot it D & R and bring an elevation forward.

More often I use the SDA feature that allows me to shoot a stack or building then turn vertically to the top and bottom to get remote elevations on the feature.

I have only used the barebones features in TDS.
