I've been discussing linetypes with other surveyors and also paying more attention to the maps I come across. In particular, sidelines of private roads and public roads. There seems to be no hard rule. Some people prefer public street sidelines to be dashed while others prefere solid. The same goes for private streets.
What's your opinion?
Also, what do you prefer for lines that are a part of your survey but not a boundary line of the property you are surveying?
So I will chime in.
All parcel lines are solid, lot line, and fee ROW lines. The parcel I am working on is a heavy solid line.
Easements are dashed. Non-ownership, or old parcel lines are also dashed, in a different scale.
Center lines, are well center lines.
Other items are a suitable linetype if needed, ie: ---OHP--- for overhead power, ---W--- for water, etc.
About the same here, phantom for subject and phantom2 for right-of-way lines. Dashed for adjoiner (you would think a surveyor site would have that word in the dictionary) property lines and hidden for easements. When things get complicated we get creative with home-made line types. We have one called "range" (similar to phantom but different) that we use for section lines that are not part of the property line.
About the same as the other two. I wouldn't even know if I could differentiate between some line types after printing, copying, faxing, scanning, etc. Solid on parcels, heavy dashed on vacating lines, dashed on departing adjoiners and r/w's... sometimes the same, sometimes different.
The street should be plainly labeled in the text that it is private or public, route number, width, recording info, etc.

Seeing that there is no RULE governing this issue, then you may use whatever linetype you think looks best and clearly defines the area, AS LONG AS YOU INCLUDE A CLEAR AND CONCISE LEGEND OF YOU SYMBOLOGY. I hate it when people assume something is "common practice" and then do not include a full legend on a plat.

Street sidelines color cyan, heavy width, continuous
Locus color green, medium width, continuous
Abutters color yellow, light medium width, phantom
Dissolved boundaries (1) color green, heavy width, tight dot
Easements or dissolved boundaries (2) color white, light medium width, dashed
it works for me, but if another way works for you, go for it.
