All you really need is a couple of rolls of flagging tape!

It's only a few bucks. Buy a couple of rolls, flag it yourself.

It's such a rip-off. Surveyors charge hundreds, even thousands of dollars, to walk around, and tie flagging! If you can tie your shoes, you can do this, easily, with skills, you learned as a child!

Stop the rip-off! Go to the hardware store!  If you are a reel-tor, or already know where your lines are, there is no need to pay big bucks, for some expert to tie these knots!

😉 cordially yours,

Nate

I sat in court yesterday. All day. My mind wandered.

I guess it's the wandering of a surveyors mind, in the bad air of too many atty/liars!

😉

@nate-the-surveyor

Is this what someone was using as an argument in court?

There's an area I work in occasionally that is, how can I say...culturally unique...

The county deputies only venture out there when they have to.?ÿ The only "store" around for miles is not only a cannabis dispensary, but they also sell stacks of "prepper" and survivalist magazines and lots of ammo.?ÿ From a "diversity" standpoint I don't feel uncomfortable at all since I also wear boots and blue jeans and rarely shave.?ÿ But I am very cautious about wandering off the public road without talking to a property owner and a few neighbors.

Anyway I had a good long (way too long) conversation with the local legal sage at that store.?ÿ All I wanted was a bottle of water and a bag of peanuts but wound up getting told every conspiracy theory that has come down the pike.?ÿ As we got around to surveying the one thing that stuck in my mind was his version of adverse possession that didn't necessarily involve any time elapse or occupation.?ÿ It did however involve a property owner "claiming" out any property he thought was his and defending it against trespass (by any means granted in the Constitution)...but only the legal owner of the land can survey the boundaries as such.?ÿ He reiterated several times it was in the Constitution..or the Bill of Rights...somewhere.

I pray I never have to survey any of his adjoiners.... 😉

@paden-cash

We had to go way out somewhere in Foothill Hillbilly-land, so we are there doing our thing and the Law Enforcement Bureau Chief is shooting the bull with the other LE guy out there when suddenly he says loudly EVERY TIME I COME UP HERE I HAVE TO DRAW MY GUN ON SOMEONE! LOL.

There was the other time the High up Deputy Chief is sitting there with the regular Officers "mentoring" and he says IF YOU'RE PULLING LEATHER THEN I'M PULLING LEATHER (I'm thinking pulling the leather on a chain but he meant his sidearm) IF YOU'RE PULLING LEATHER THEN I'M PULLING LEATHER AND I'M SHOOTING IN THE DIRECTION YOU'RE SHOOTING BECAUSE WE'RE BROTHERS etc etc.

Living in rural America has many advantages.

Knowing something about most of the people can be helpful in avoiding jury duty.

When you take on a boundary survey that is headed to court, be reminded that you can charge big money for the boredom of sitting in court and listening to so much that has nothing to do with boundary retracement.

It would be hard to sit on a jury where the defendant is charged with illegal sales of contraband when everybody around there buys everything from him anyway.

Well, sorta. The judges ruling is pending. So, I want to see how he rules. I somehow expect that this is "One for the book", as James Herriot used to say. 🙂 It will be interesting.

The best part is attending a deposition where they ask stupid questions like where did you park your truck?  I'm thinking all this technical stuff they could ask me, residuals, etc and they are thinking duh where did you park your truck?

True, but also make sure whomever is financially responsible for your fee knows this in advance and it's documented. ?????ÿ

Ya only needs them cord-in-ates if you don't have one of those transom camera gadgets that shows ya the lines. 😉 ?ÿ

I recall Kent posting pictures taken at eye level on which he had overlaid lines showing the boundaries.?ÿ Neat but gives clients a mistaken impression of the technology.

Somebody mentioned a while back about letting an adjoiners look through his inst, and see the crosshairs on a pin, or such. Seeing the crosshairs so centered, they were satisfied that the survey was correct.

That was funny!

I've heard of that working, too.?ÿ The neighbor to my brother was defending against the neighbor on the other side, and had a surveyor come out.?ÿ?ÿ

The surveyor had him take the rod to where he thought the corner was and had the challenger look to see him at the crosshairs. Convinced.

Was dealing with an obstinate client many years ago and had him look through the total station.?ÿ He was claiming we were putting a bend in what was to be his property line.?ÿ We put a flag directly above one end bar and tied a flag around a limb on a tree directly above the bar at the other end.?ÿ He knew about levels as he did some earthwork contracting.?ÿ So, I aimed at the flag and had him see it as well,?ÿ Then I had him watch me invert the scope instead of rotating the 180 horizontally.?ÿ When he looked he saw the flag hanging on the limb.?ÿ He exploded because he had been proven wrong.?ÿ His exact words were, "I ain't gonna believe no damn machine!?ÿ This is not a straight line!"

@nate-the-surveyor

Nate,

I had something similar happen to me one time when I was hired to cut 90 acres out of a larger farm.  The landowner took me around and had me set the irons on the proposed corners where he wanted to sell to.  When I was getting started he asked me how many tries was it going to take me to cut the line out through the woods to the corner, I told him that I was going to hit it on the first try.  He asked me how I was going to do it and I said “Do you see that hill over there?  He said yes, then I told him that I was going to shoot over to the top of that hill and then shoot the iron that we had set on the other side of the woods and then I was going to come back to the starting point and cut the line out.  He said that he was going to help me, but did not know what I was doing and was going back to his house.  We were just finishing that line when he came walking down the cut line so I let him look through the instrument and see that we were splitting the iron that we had set earlier.”

Ed
