Our S6 is a hand-me-down from Caltrans.

The battery box on the instrument has become slightly loose probably due to 9 years of wear. It's gotten to the point where the battery can lose contact killing the instrument. So yesterday I folded a paper towel and put it between the battery and the swing out box and that seems to have solved the problem at least for now.

Maybe the swing out box can be replaced.

On long monitoring jobs we hook to an external 12V battery via cable. If you ever do that, you should still leave a battery inside for proper balance.
