Client: We looked at your man-hour estimates and you have more than six weeks of field crew time for the topographic survey. That's not going to work with the project schedule, can't you just scan it or something?
Surveyor: There is a project schedule already set? That would be nice to have. As for scanning, why don't you just ask if I can use f$%king magic, because both are just as realistic an option.
The site is 3 linear miles (120' wide) that generally looks like this
6 weeks? That means about 530' per day? Or roughly 1.36 acres per day? I'll do it in 3 weeks! 🙂
Ok, we'll double the field crews, and add some overtime...

I've been in there for years on various projects (it's an old RR right of way that I've already prepared DOT ROW plats for)... you'll loose money 😉
I'm assuming their job specs are looking for more specifics than would be normal around here. Actually, here they would turn the bulldozers loose first, then call us.
What are those green things? 😉

Carrots. Really, really big carrots. Try to imagine the size of the carrots underground when the tops are so big.
The customer is always right - we'll do that job in 5 weeks, 4 days. thank you for the opportunity to shave down our estimate to fit your budget!
6 weeks to delivery is already an aggressive schedule for a job like this. 3 miles with cross sections every 50 feet is about 12 per day, every day, for 5 weeks. That's 1400 feet of heavy chopping a day. Plus control.
I wonder if you plan to use some brush clearing machinery to slice some cross section lines? Then you could topo those cut cross sections with RTK, maybe, if the leaves are still off (or if you have a Javad). That might be worthwhile.
Nah. Just grab whatever you can find online, dress it up, interpolate and extrapolate as needed and...........voila..............send the invoice.

They misread the spreadsheet and assumed that 480 hours of "2 man field crew" time was per man; i.e. 240 field hours or six weeks.
They also ignored the three weeks of control, seven weeks of utility designating, eleven weeks of office tech time etc.. I getting so I prefer projects led by engineers rather than landscape architects.
I bet our dear friend TDD could get that job all sorts of done in less than a week :imp: 😀
Is that the Anacostia Bike Trail Project? I worked on the section just to the north about 9 years ago. I feel your pain, they didn't want us to cut any brush.
It's takes at least that much time to produce "intelligent mapping" for an unintelligent client. How many times have I heard, "we need to have our Concept done before that". My reply is " how about using the GIS data for your Concept". Isn't that about where GIS data works reasonably well? Our Team can win a project, go through 3+ iterations of fee and scope estimates, provide a preliminary schedule, and sometimes wait many months to get a NTP. Suddenly, the schedule that we gave months ago is ignored because the Project is behind schedule before we begin. This is the reason that I am willing to take a cut in pay and just survey. Matching resources with schedules is impossible when you don't know when the project is going to actually start. The Client will ask will you be able do this project on time? My reply is absolutely if you can tell me when it is going to start.

Responded offline...You already know too much 😉

So using a bobcat to mow down cross sections every 50' is out, is it?

That would of been my first plan! and probably my second plan too!
