Unless your quote was $500 or less, I can't see the problem there.

No, no problem here.
It was just the strangest comment that i've ever heard
The caller was obviously shopping price,
he didn't like my fee and yet he was referred to me by a competitor that was cheaper than me
the entire comment was very odd to me
The guy that recommended you probably knew you would be higher than him so it could possibly come back around. That's why he sent him to you instead of a lowballer. He should send you something at Christmas.
How does that work, anyway?
Client: Wow you're expensive. can you recommend me to someone who won't rip me off like that?
Surveyor: Sure, ole joe seems like an honest guy. He never treats people as bad as I do.
Client: Why thank you. Although you're out to get me for all I'm worth, at least you're an honest guy.
Surveyor: You're quite welcome.
I gave a price two weeks ago to the son of the owner, $800. Simple job, wide open, all lot corners in, split lot down middle, stake 1000' of line for fenceing. 3 hours RTK field work + simple map.
He called me back to tell me his dad (owner) hired another surveyor ... for $1800. "Because that guy didn't use GPS... and my dad doesn't know how that GPS stuff works".
I think I've heard it all now.
