Message: "Hi, you guys did a survey and I would like to get a copy of it, it's in XYZ subdivision." from a local charity.
I finally get time to call back, and he needs a Lot 7, Block 2.?ÿ
I know we did a couple of these PUD's numbered 1-5 and another surveyor did the others, since I'm not sure which ones we did I start looking for the survey of the lot.
Can't find one, so I call him back.
After a back and forth and some searching I finally figure out he needs the subdivision plat, we never did a site survey for that lot.?ÿ
The plat is on file at the courthouse, which he can pick up anytime, they would probably send him a copy. That is my standard response.?ÿ
But, since it's a local charity, I get his email, I have a PDF of the entire subdivision and send it on to him.?ÿ
I look at the time and most of an hour is gone.?ÿ
Whew!!!
Since we have done some work for them, I enter time and figure that will be a donation, but really how will they build anything when they can't even get a copy of the subdivision plat.?ÿ

I realize this will likely illicit a wide range of responses but if they are not the original client that is named on the survey why would you spend that time searching.
It is common around here for people to call and I require the Job number, drawing name and who it was done for. And I absolutely refuse to give out my work to anybody but the original client, I just will not do it.
If it is recorded in the courthouse I will direct them there.?ÿ?ÿ

actually I think you did alright Mighty (being a charity ??? )
I HOPE you're not referring to other surveyors. In my 45+ years of surveying I've only had 2 surveyors refuse me copies of plats. And one of those called me within a month wanting a copy of a plat from me. I have had to pay for research and printing fees (all reasonable) though.

So... you have people calling and asking for copies of random people's ALTAs or something?
Since you did the subdivision, a stakeout should be easy, peasy for your firm. You said a it is a charity, if it were Habitat for Humanity or such, I have worked for several firms that donated stakeouts for their house projects. More complex structures are more work, but a simple donated stakeout, is good for the firm.
BTW, if your pdf did not have signature and seal, I would want a copy form the courthouse.

It was the filed copy from the courthouse, we pay for all the subdivision/survey PDF's each year. Normally, I send people to the courthouse to get copies of surveys, even when I do have them, otherwise there is a danger of me becoming the go to place for information and I don't want that kinda retail business. I don't have copies of my own plats that are unsigned by the county/city.
