The old index books were quite helpful in redirecting the searcher when looking at alternative names & spellings. As in "see ____".

The computerized index at masslandrecords.com is not so kind. So far I have found indexing for one state agency as:

MWRA

Massachusetts Water Resources Authority

Mass Water Resources Authority and

Commonwealth of Massachusetts MWRA

with no helpful cross-linking whatsoever. The computer age, making life easier. Oh well, at least I don't have to drive in to the big city for research very often now.

I'm not a big fan of a lot of scanned documents researchable through our various county clerk's offices in NJ. Most of them are scanned by interns to save costs and the interns, while getting a good image most of the time, it seems like every time you really need a clear copy, it ends up either fuzzy or illegible.

Thats a good point...but I think jurisdictions that do a good job with "see..." are in the minority.
