At what point do you decide to call refusal for a pin setting excursion?

I bent 5 others far worse than this and decided on cutting off the top 3 inches of material at the bend and surrounded with rocks for additional indication of the point.....yes it's stable...try to move it...I dare you...

And go!

Was surveying 19 miles of P-Line for a proposed County road through undeveloped high country and were required to set a hub&tack at every instrument station for control when we came back and cross sectioned, then maybe the next year set L-Line and catch stakes.?ÿ Yup, three summer's worth of surveying.

There was about a mile of solid volcanic basalt near the summit and we didn't carry rock setting gear so just painted & scribed those stations.?ÿ The boss didn't like it and sent us back to "set godd*m hubs like I told you to."?ÿ So we cashed some chips with the maintenance guys and bandsawed some 2" high square bottom hubs at their shop and requisitioned a gallon of two part epoxy.?ÿ Went back, hasped & trimmed the bottom of our "hubs" so they closely conformed to the rock, then glued the suckers in place.?ÿ I gotta admit, it looked magnificent.?ÿ Of course, the whole project fell through when the engineers donned their caps and concluded it would cost a million-billion dollars to punch that road through.?ÿ It was all a scam as a coupla County commissioners and the Director of Public Works had purchased acreage cheap near the summit for subdivision into summer cabin parcels, road access would make them a real estate gold mine.?ÿ Crooks.

A few years later I was hunting grouse up there and the "rock hubs" were still in fine shape.?ÿ Guess they'll be one of my few legacies as a surveyor.

What can I say, I want it done right. In the end the new lease parcels will make several hangar owners happy, and me for being full of enough P&V to still swing full size sledge's and shear off chunks of the rebar shapers with the angst and glee of a 25 yo......

I used to have a monster bosch in the truck for such tasks. The 18v ryobi does just as good now.?ÿ

Brute force was the solution, but I don't want to void the warranty on my new shoulders or elbows. or left hand. or neck...

JB,

I really appreciate your determination, resolve and focus on the job at hand.?ÿYou, obviously, exemplify the?ÿtraits of a great surveyor. My Brother. I have encountered similar situations. Had to reload and go bigger.

I recall digging up a 1" iron pipe in an asphalt covered, concrete paved street. It was not only 1" O.D., it was 1" long. The map said 18" long.

I was just reminiscing today, after listening to a rehash of some of the "clone" legends of the Jim Rome Show. I will not bore the public with the explanations of the JRS "clones".

I wonder what TDD and/or Mr. Binge, from the old P_B Site, would think of your efforts. I recall those dudes were pretty tough on help. Even without proper hydration, their guys would have to get that stuff in the ground without a whimper. And walk back to the truck for the 8 pounder and a star drill. Not water!

Memories have become very enjoyable these last few years.

Good question.?ÿ We have a spiffy hammer drill for concrete monument installation, but it's never been used since December 2019 or earlier when I started. I thought it would be a good idea, esp if I met this with each proceeding corners, but they all seemed to acquiesce after the 5th bent twisted bar cleared the top of the bin.

It was the last set of pins for the departing mentor and I'd set the same way if he was staying. Right is right. Hammer drill for everyday use is not our operation, but I'll be considering it going forward.?ÿ

Need longer bits too. That was an 18 in #4. Refusal came after the first 12 inches, and Richard, stop right there, don't be dirty.... ???œ ???? ?????ÿ

I was out inspecting a job where the Contractor had been required to set 3"X360" aluminum monuments. About the third or fourth monument we were checking I noticed the stampings were readable from the South. I bent down and gave the cap a twist to align it properly. Boy was I surprised when it moved easily. They had sawed off 30" of the pipe and there was just 6 inches set in dirt.

Whew.?ÿ I see the typo.?ÿ I was going to say.....30' deep monuments is a bit much.?ÿ?ÿ

And wow. Not much of a monument if it's turning and barely buried.?ÿ If you don't like that contractor, just round up an ambitious homeless guy and tell him the value of those easily acquired recycling gems!

500k wasn't just the Sx, that sounds like PT and all the rest, but Jesus cripple on a hickory stick, that's a lot of bread to repair, 5.5 mil more and you could be Steve Austin, surely. ?????ÿ

18 rounds of cut and paste, but honestly I don't feel most of it. Aches and pains for sure but most everything works. Modern medicine is awesome...

@jitterboogie Sorry about my fat finger. They were 30 inch pipes.

He'd have to walk a half mile between through some pretty challenging terrain. Contractor probably figured nobody would ever walk up there and nobody probably has since.

Was that from bending rebar haphazard like or did you have the misfortune of testing the safety restraining and cage of the vapor venting horse replacing carriages of death?
