One area I didn't see mentioned that is extremely important to REALTORS is flood zone determination and elevation certificates.

In our area, REALTORS have to disclose if the property is in a flood plain. If you can show them how knowledgeable you are in determining Flood Zones and how Elevation Certificates and LOMA's work it will go a long way in generating some goodwill....future business

I know surveyors love to trash REALTORS, but I have gotten a lot of business from having a good relationship with many real estate offices.

Another source are local insurance companies. Giving a free "seminar" to them on Flood Zones, Elevation Certs can be very beneficial. Worked for me.

I realize this post is old news, but I was wondering if you made the presentation, and if so how it went? I also have this.........opportunity and I am trying to get some helpful advice as well.

I meant to follow up and forgot.

It started off pretty well, until they asked if we would go out and flag the corners on a platted lot. We told them that we would not due to liability issues. This is a neighboring town and we've done very little work up there over the years. Then they asked what a regular survey would cost. We told them. They didn't like that number. That being said, since then we've gotten a couple of jobs through them, so it wasn't a wasted trip.

Thank you Tommy. I was figuring that would be the inevitable outcome of such a meeting. I wish I could figure out a way to get realtors to prefer quality surveys over cheap surveys. We have two people who are registered as surveyors here in my county that are the realtor's go-to-guys because they will provide a piece of paper with a stamp that the bank will accept and charge next to nothing.

I was reading this article the other day, and other than a nice write up about a local company, it struck me when the included quote from a client referred to surveying as a commodity. It seems that the particular survey company has stopped trying to fight that, and is trying to make money within the structure of those clients. Essentially, these types of clients find another way to do what they want, without us, if we do not meet their needs.

It will take all types of surveyors to make this current world go round.
