Has anyone out there purchased a Schonstedt Maggie Magnetic Locator and if so, what is your opinion of that instrument and its operation?
Would you buy another one or recommend it?
What don't you like about it?
I have the predecessor to it. It's been in the shop once. Busted ribbon wire, on the extension device.
I'm curious too.
I plan to give a good look at the hound dog.
But, there's no substitute for portability.
Let us know.
In addition to the post by J Tanner does anyone own a Hound Dog locator? The "Fence Ignoring Technology" is intriguing. If it really works I'm going to try one, I've been using Schonstedt's since the 70's.
I'm curious about the hound dog also. It looks like a sleek design and the fence ignoring stuff would be awesome if it works. I have used Schonstedt and CST locators in the past. I have CST now because of the price....
I have 2 hound dogs. The polarity switch.... ie fence ignoring is handy. It's very light and easy to carry compared to the 52x. Con is speaker is quiet, no volume adjustment. Fine in the country but challenging next to a busy highway.
The ignoring mode will only pick up positive charge like the top of a rebar, and ignore the negative pole like the bottom of a fence, or tpost marking the pin.
It is possible to have a vertical rebar with reverse polarity. I've seen it, we'll according to the hound dog, but overall I really recommend them. Pins in chain link fence are easy to find.
IMVHO, all magnetic locators should have a jack for headphones and/or bluetooth capabilities........
I purchased the Maggie as a back-up locator. I like it. It works well, like the 52.
My only complaint is its sensitivity. It is too sensitive. I always liked being able to turn the sensitivity down to pinpoint something under asphalt/concrete. It is hard to do with the Maggie.
It is also made a plastic/resin material and has a handle. I work alone, but I would be afraid of a lazy field person using it as a cane and it snapping in half.
Overall, I like it.
