I can't understand how you can calculate a traverse and relate it to the ground without some type of calibration or localization.

?ÿ

It is NOT particularly difficult, and it is something that you should learn how to do, even if you decide that the procedure doesn't fit into your workflow. Whether you are?ÿusing State Plane, UTM, or LDP coordinates doesn't really matter, the "process" is the same. The "grid" coordinates are intrinsically linked to Latitude & Longitude, which is linked to ECEF XYZ, which is what the GPS unit is generating internally (before the Data Collector transforms/projects the XYZ to NEU).

While "localization/calibration" works fine for many SMALL projects, it is NOT required. There is always additional ways to skin the cat.
