I spoke with a homeowner today who had no clue about his homestead on 3 acres that he just spent $300k for and he wanted the lines staked.?ÿ
After I did some basic cursory research I managed to work up a price and we spoke for a while about a wide range of topics. He is a Union Shop Steward so after our BS'ing we finally got to the money matters. I told him he should expect a price of around $4k for the survey and line stake and of course he was stunned.?ÿ
So I asked him what sort of price he was expecting and he responded: "Oh h-e-l-l I don't know maybe $1200" and again I asked how he arrived at that number and he said:?ÿ "I guess I just pulled it out of my a$$".
?ÿ
Don??t know the particulars but somewhere between his and yours is about right for my town.
I this case you would work your butt off for nothing, lots of line and stakes every 50-75 feet. Anything less and you would be giving it away.
?ÿ
Edit: forgot to mention and while it should be understood it would obviously require a complete retracement as well.?ÿ
I hear you brother. There are some 1/2 acre surveys I wouldn’t touch for less than 3K and there are some 10 acre surveys I’d do for 3K
So that is what came out in the toilet today??ÿ Don't worry buddy - I flushed it!
You know, if it only cost 0.4% of the value of all my investments and worldly possessions to maintain them I suppose I'd be pretty content pulling figures out of my rear too.
Exactly, there are many factors that are more important than area when calculating the price/value of a survey.
I figure a pick-up should cost about $19,999, but it don't.?ÿ?ÿ And if I told a salesman that, they'd laugh at me.?ÿ The fact that I don't see the other $30k of value in those hunks of metal and plastic don't matter.?ÿ As surveyors, who need to not only make a living, we have to make out truck payments, our equipment payments, pay our insurance, fuel, have some lunch money, keep the lights on, other things folks don't see.?ÿ But, as lamented in otherposts here, so many surveyors are willing to charge just enough to get the job, without looking at getting enough to make a real living.
