Rail Line Staking

What is the most efficient way to calculate,layout and quality control the?ÿ staking of railroad lines? We currently have a rail project but the project surveyor is using alignments to stake out the centerline of track, there are multiple steps in the data collector to set one point...picking on a line,toggling to find station and offset . I've always calculated points for roads, pipe lines etc from plans using dwgs and post processed as stake reports in TBC to check accuracy. Alignment verses points?
